I've bought three times a five pack of Maxell blanks. They where suposted
to be the same (colour). But Maxell probably cut some corners with the
last pack I bought.
Here's the story.
The first two five packs where Maxell colour disks that had the same back and
front. They also had a metal shutter. I've still have some of them (about
40 discs or my, where stolen about a year ago!) and they work fine. No
problems.
The third five pack was different. I opened it, and immediatly saw that
Maxell changed them. Since other manufacturers do the same, I supposed that
everything was alright. The changes made where mainly looks: the back is
made out of a non transparent white plastic and the shutter is also plastic.
So I sticked a disc into my 702, and recorded. Everything went fine until....
I tried to remove the disc. It would come out for about 1-2 mm, but not
further. It was stuck. I kept trying and finaly the disc came out. I inspected
the disc and it had little curls of plastic on the sides!
Stupid as I was, I sticked in a second disc and the same happened.
I measured the discs and they where bigger than the specification.
I don't know if Maxell solved this problem, since this arrived to me
about two years ago. But I avoid buying Maxell discs. It's like LarZ who
doesn't buy Sony discs because he had troubles with them.
I stick with Sony premium and HiSpace discs. Both are durable and cheap.
Cheers,
Ralph -> glad that his 702 survived those Maxell discs!
