... attach one of the accessory cables that came
with my MZ R-50 to the Audi radio line in. I had reasoned that when the
manual referred to the capability of attaching a CD ( changer) player an MD
player could also be attached for input to the radio. However, it seems that
any attachment would call for a DIN type plug for any line in ( probably on
account of the "changer" aspect. )

I recently installed a Apline CD Changer in Dad's Volvo S70.
You cant yank the head unit as it has controls for the EFI anti-theft
control device (on the S70).
There *is* a DIN plug in the rear. Actually it wasnt a DIN plug, but
rather a similar type plue (closer to a keyboard plug).
BLITZ makes adapters to allow CD Changers to be added on.
Sometimes they requrire an extra connection or two. (Dads
required a 12v constant source for example)
Crutchfield has em - I think.
Some CD changers (The Alpine for example) send the audio sognal
down the "DIN" plug. Others (Sony) have RCA inputs.
If you go for the interface unit designed to work with a
Sony - yiu can easily figure out what the line inputs are
(duh - RCA). However, you *may* have to wire a 12v or ground
jumper into the other controler plug to "fool" the system
inot thinking the changer is connected. In the case of an
older Sony Head unit that had a CD input, I wired a 12v source
to the "cd changer "on" sensor. This was connected via a 12v
lighted switch. Flip the switch, the light goes on, and the
head unit expects a line signal on the RCA inputs.
One additional item to consider. If you use the portable unit
and connect the portable to a 12v power supply (so you dont
drain the interal battery), you *may* get ground loop problems.
This can be easily remedied by the connectoin of a "ground loop
isolator" wire. This is easily available from Radio Shack.
Its a dual RCA wire with a "can" thing in the middle (which I
presume contains "cheap" isolation transformers). You can
of course make one yourself. Be aware that "high grade"
isolation transformsa re not cheap ($30+ each last I looked).
