2) Time lenght -
Get 90min on a MD and Im there - or get the cost per min
down to the same (aka like $0.75 per 60min MD). Also - for recording
stuff -
the
60min / 90min format works out a bit better

This is one reason I would hang on to cassettes is where time matters. I
even use C-120 tapes (60 minutes per side) on stereo systems and "boom-box"
radio / cassette recorders connected to the mains for the purposes of doing
"catch-it-all" recording of radio programs. With an auto-reverse mechanism,
I can capture two hours of programme material in stereo before I have to
change tapes.
Then I go through the tape for songs that I like from that broadcast and
copy them off to MD. This is what I did with MIX 106.5's "Millenium Party
Mix" on Millenium Eve, when I headed up to Sydney with some close friends
for the Millenium fireworks celebrations.
While I was at the fireworks celebrations and was listening to MIX 106.5
Millenium Party Mix on my cassette-radio Walkman, I thought that it was
worth it to record some of the show. Because we were staying with a host
family over the New Millenium, I asked that one of the C-120 tapes that I
brought with me be put into a stereo and the stereo set to record MIX 106.5.
Because this host family, especially the housewife, are concerned about
SECURITY, they would leave a radio playing while they were out of the
house -- that classic security measure; and were heading out for the night.
They were able to do this and let the unit record an hour of the Millenium
Party Mix, with the cassette deck "clicking off" at the end of the side.
Then I came home to Melbourne and used a Sony JE520 MiniDisc deck that I
have regular access to and went through this tape; copying choice songs from
the cassette.
So, if used with an auto-reverse deck, the old cassette can still be a good
cost-effective medium for some continuous real-time "sound-capturing"
applications like "air-checking"; lecture-recording; sermon-recording and
hte like. MD can be used to archive the tapes or recorded selections; yet
still keep the quality.
Who knows what will happen if the 5-hour stereo long play mode in the
MDS-JB940 MD deck will make MD cut into this territory that cassette has to
its own.
With regards,
Simon Mackay
