The main problem is that most low-end sound cards are so damn noisy.
Without decent shielding they pick up every piece of stray RF in the PC
case and radiate it down the wire.  Mine is incredibly noisy, with the
chip on the motherboard being close to the CPU.

It's okay on a stereo system but would be aweful on headphones.
