While I was in Germany, I found a good solution to the problem of
replacing a lost MD charger. At Conrad Electronics, they had two power
supplies that were powered from a PC. They are in the form of a PC card
and wil supply from three to 12 volts at 2.2A. The voltages are
selectable by jumper in the following steps: 3v, 4.5v, 5v, 6v, 7.5v, 9v
and 12v. The one I bought has one voltage, a four plug X shaped
adapter, and cost DM 19.95 ($10 US). Export Computer Accessories item

They had a more universal one with the same voltages available, plus a
separate 5 volt supply. It had many more power connectors to choose
from and only cost DM 29.95 or about $15 US. I would say that if you
need the plug for the recorder too, the more expensive one would be the
best choice.
They are made in China and I assume they are or will be available at
computer hobby stores and electronic stores in the States and the UK. It
looks like they were made to power speakers, or a scanner or printer.
