I am having a similar dilema re: Car MD.
Until last weekend I had been using a Sony tape adapter with my CD and MD
portables to play CD/MD through my car's (actually pretty good quality)
factory tape stereo. Not car audio perfection, but pretty flexible.
However last weekend, after playing some tapes for a wee while, my car
stereo has decided it doesn't like the tape adapter anymore.
Condemned to once again listen to tapes only in my car!! What a bummer. I
mean, after being used to MD in my car I'm finding it hard to believe how I
ever put up with tapes.
So it means I'm having to think about getting a new head unit, but I also
really want to be able to play both CDs and MDs in my car. However even the
most basic single MD head unit (Sony MDX-C5970 I think) is NZ$900 as against
a basic sony CD head unit at NZ$600. Plus all your pals have CDs (and even
tapes). But since the prices of CD/MD changers are similar, if you want to
get a head unit for one format and a changer for the other, either way
around it costs the same. Cunning, eh?
i suppose I could just get another tape head unit that works, but the tape
adapter method isn't brilliant (batteries run out, and it's harder to chage
discs) and sound quality suffers a bit, if I'm going to change head units I
suppose I should do i properly. The other solution might be to get either a
CD or an MD head unit AND a tape head unit that works (there is space in my
car dash) so i can play the other format through the good old tape adapter.
I've seen someone actually have this setup in their car - are there any
problems with having two head units? Anyone know how you hook this up?
Anyhow I'm interested in how other people have dealt with the MD car audio
dilema. I think I'm coming to the conclusion that if I can only have one
media in my car, it would be MD, they're so much less bulky, easier to
navigate (track titles etc) & harder to damage than CDs.
p.s. If anyone has had the same problem with the tape adapter or knows of a
solution, let me know. The symptoms I've had are as follows: When I insert
the car adapter in my car stereo it plays forward (the usual direction for
the adapter) for 3 seconds, autoreverses once, then again, then again, and
then spits the adapter out altogether. the tape adapter works perfectly in
my pal's car tape deck, so I've drawn the conclusion it's my head unit
that's the problem.

I am a big fan of MDs (I have over 100 MDs). But here in Canada, CDs are
under $20CDN, while blanks are about $6-7. Not to mention the time involved
in dubbing a CD to MD and titling it...etc (yes I know about the MXD3).
Also MD isn't as popular here compared to Japan, so all my friends have CDs,
and a CD player would be nice for those road trips when I want to listen to
my friends CD. Lastly, cost. An MD head unit is usually more expensive
than a comparable CD HU.
While I like those CD/MD single DIN units, they cost the same as a MD with
CD changer or CD with MD changer! Now that's crazy!
