Perhaps from a consummer perspective they should - but from a manufacturers
perspective, it's simply not in their interests. For example, hypothetically
if Brand X of audio equipment uses similar, perhaps even identical standards
and all can work together (I'm not saying they currently do that well...),
if you want that sort of functionality, then you are virtually forced to buy
that manufacturer's other kit.
Creating truly open standards for this, exhibits no real wins for the
manufacturers, and potentially only losses. I guess you could argue that if
equipment was integrated so well, it would possibly draw more customers, or
perhaps encourage customers to buy more kit. But there's no guarantee it's
gonna be Brand X's kit.

It would be truly a thing of beauty if all rechargable cells were
interchangable, the same for remotes. USB ports were everywhere, and remote
controls were used standard codes / frequencies.
Just can't see it happening...
