In my case, I time shift talk radio shows so that I can listen to
them in the evening when I have the time. I don't want to be tied
down to my computer so I blast it off to MD.
I use two methods. One is to use Cybercorder to record streaming
audio to disk as a .wav file. I can quickly use Cool Edit Pro to
chop the commercials. It's amazing how much different commercial
audio looks in comparison to program material. One can very rapidly
zero in on the commercial content and zap it using this tool.
The other technique is to use the (temporarily) banned program
X-fileget. This is the one that RealAudio got a temporary
restraining order against because the programmers so successfully
reverse-engineered the RealAudio protocol. There are bootleg copies
out there so search a bit to find it. X-fileget does several really
nifty things. First off, it can grab several different RealAudio
streams at once. Either drop the URLs in the window or invoke the
program with the URLs. Secondly, for non-live RealAudio, it fools
the server into spitting out the stream at full speed. I can grab
the whole file that way as fast as if I was FTPing it. Really nifty
to go to one of the many web pages offering streaming audio of, say,
big band music and suck off all the files at once.
Once I have the .ra files, I use StreamBox Ripper (by the same guys
as X-fileget) to convert the .ra to .wav so I can edit the
commercials.
I have three or four different shows I like to listen to, several
running at the same time. X-fileget has been the solution to the
problem of how to capture all at once. I find myself saving the
programs on MD to listen to on the weekend. The only problem with
X-fileget is that it doesn't handle G2 very well, it's (publicly
available) development being frozen by the injunction. Wish someone
would open source a similar program.
BTW, RealAudio sounds superb over DSL or any other wide bandwidth
link - much better than MP3 at the same bitrate.
