MD: Digital recording problems

I am having problems with the recording level on my sharp 831. I have had no
problems since I purchased it. But when I record from my optical out on my
sound card or hi-fi stereo the volume is noticeably lower. You have to pump
up the volume to 30 to really hear it well.
Reason????
