sorry to hear of your bad luck with the new Sharp.  I would like to give the
flip side of the coin. I ordered on from Japan before they were available in
the US.  I have never had a single problem with the unit.  Not a single UTOC
error or any recording problems.  I just want to remind you that even though
it is disappointing on a individual level, I am sure there are many, many
more owners of Sharp products who would beg to differ with you, like me.
Best of luck on the return and maybe consider the company you purchased it
from.
