1- Mostly all microphone could be ok for your md recorder... It depends of your needs... If it's only for conferences, interview or general talking, even a pc microphone without batteries in it could be fine... There is a lot of battery-microphone (like tie-pin microphone) or dual microphone that could be very good too... And also some specialized microphone use by music fan to record live show (some microphones are hidden into the sunglasses band... To be short, every microphone with a jack plug could be used for minidisc recording... 2- For me there is a huge difference between analog and digital recording... I used to record some MP3 songs from my PC with Win Amp directly with my Soundblaster card (with analog sound card output). All my friends was amazed of the sound, they were very satisfied but for me it was full of annoying noises... I purchased later on a Xitel sound card with optical output and the difference was BIG... The sound is great now... I record a lot of MP3 and it's very wonderful... Since I'm a quite old now, nearly 40 years old, I'm in love with old song of '70, '80 and some from the '90... They are more easy to find on MP3 than store and like everyone say before, on a regular CD, only 10% to 40% of the songs are good (and sometime less than this). so why pay a CD when you can have the same songs for FREE. OF course, when I love an artist for all its songs, I buy the CD; it's worth it... but else... not ! 3- For nature, birds recording, you need a really good mic... Very sensitive, I think it could be better to go on a specialized store, hunt for the good mic but not buy it from this place because it will be too expensive, try to find it on internet for less... I'm pretty sure, you will find it for half the price... Good Luck ! I have read faqs and lots of web pages in the past two days but have not found answers to these 2 questions (apologies if they are frequently asked and if I have just missed finding the data ! ) :- (1) What kind of microphone is typically accepted by minidisc recorders ie. what input impedance ? (2) one of the faqs commenting on analog copy said that this mode generally sounds fine . But I wonder what "generally" means! Would I expect to hear audible (even intrusive) levels of background hiss ( a bit like the bad old days of cassette/tape ) ? The reason I ask (2) is that I am also new to taking .WAV samples of CDs onto my PC harddrive. I had a lot of trouble finding a digital audio extract program that would do the job without clicks stutters and bumps! So I initially did it by analog ( with 'Audiograbber' I think it was ) but the background hiss was unacceptable. I wonder therefore if this is a problem with analog copying in general, or was it a fault specific to my CDdrive/software/soundcard ? I have since found a method in 'CDex' which seems to be happy to do it digitally from my drive, but it still leaves me with the question-mark over analog copying from digital material. To complete the picture : the intended use for all this audio analog copying is the portable recording of bird song, animal sounds, environment noise (quarry blasting, aircraft, Concorde etc ) and the subsequent editing/copying/ compiling. Thanks for your time, Malcolm.
