The noise is comming from your car as you suspected. It can be
alternator whine, spark plug firing, bad spark plug cable or noise from
the computers. They make spark plug wires with noise suppression, they
also make filters for the alternator. IF the noise is a whine it is
comming from the alternator while the spark plugs make more of a lower
pitched static noise.

You may be able to get a noise reduction kit and install it on the on
the wire that goes to the cigarette lighter plug.
A bad battery and corroded battery cable connections can also cause
problems. A good battery, cables and conncections will act as a filter
for any ac noise that is introduced on the DC bus. That is because a
battery acts like a direct short for ac with only the batteries internal
resisitance to stop its flow. If the battery is getting old, the
internaal resistance goes up and it doesn't ground out the ac noise
signal as well.

Try a noise filter kit from your local radio supply store first because
it is the cheapest.

There are several mikes available that will work well. Here is one I
designed and is about $10 to build.

Professionals makes several that work well, there are also other mike
construction projects that are inexpensive.

If you used a mono lapel mike and got mono in only one channel, I
suspect that it wasn't plugged in all the way.
