I think you're talking about the CD extensions made by Pacific
Microsonics, called HDCD (acronym from High Definition Compatible
Digital.... Many people thinks that you're talking about a High
Definition CD, but this digital technology it's applicable to a lot of
digital devices, inluding, of course, MDs). What it does? Simply. Put 20
bits in an standard 16-bit CD. Result: A big increase in CD quality
sound. I own a couple of HDCD CDs - Dire Straits Greatest Hits & B-52's
Greatest Hits - (and heard a third - Bee Gees' One Night Only - ) and it
sound really better. I don't own a decoder right now, but I'm going to
buy one soon.

HDCD in MD? Yes, it could be. AFAIK, Sanyo has a chip that does this
miracle... in recording & playback!

It would be hard, but the people at Pacific Microsonics told me that
you cannot have a HDCD MD unless you feed the ATRAC with an HDCD ADC.
And if you make a MD copy of a HDCD MD... good bye 20 bits quality :(
Perhaps the better solution it's to feed 20 bits in a MD recorder. In
other words, an HDCD CD Player must have a 20 bits digital output and
the MD recorder accept those 20 bits and encode it with all this new
info. Result: A better MD recording

Remember: It's an intermediate solution between regular CDs & DVD-A &
SACD (A not very good idea by Sony, but I want to hear one of these and
see how good is an absolute value encoding).

And it's a good idea to check out the HDCD website to understand in a
better way the process.

        My two cents.

PD: Sony, Panasonic & other electronics companies: Please include it!
