If one or more tracks on the tape have monaural material, you can record them
in mono; all but some of the very earliest units can play regular mono, and
it doubles the capacity of the space it takes up. (Yes, you can have mono
and stereo tracks on the same disc, but you can't combine a mono-mode track
and a stereo-track into a single track.) If a ninety-minute tape has at
least eighteen-and-a-fraction minutes of monaural audio, you can fit it onto
an 80m59s MiniDisc.
I've no idea of how your collection is arranged: is it possible to regroup
the songs on the tapes into eighty-minute batches? Or do the songs that are
currently together on one tape have to remain together?
