I guess I mainly like the idea of using porties in the car, perhaps because
I liked the stock head unit so much, and the I found the sound with this and
a portie was more than acceptable.

Speaking of porties - I have two, a Sharp MT-16 (*remarkably* similar to
your MT-15) and an Aiwa AM-F65, *both* use clamshell openings! That's the
only true pain in using them in the car - with a head unit, or a portie with
a slot in, it's pretty easy to change a disk. That said, I do tend to choose
one MD at the start of my journey and listen to it for the duration -
wouldn't do for long journeys, though.
