I've never owned a tray loader, but I recently had a casual play with the
new JB 940 and the new ES MD deck in the Sony Style store here and I liked
the push in method better.

The tray is nice and smooth and quiet, but it takes longer because you have
to wait for the tray to come out before you can insert the disc. You also
have to set the disc in the tray - not a big deal, but not as easy for lazy
people like me who prefer to just thrust the MD in the general direction of
the deck and get it going! Actually, apart from the loading mechanism I
found it hard to pick differences between the 940 and the ES deck - apart
from fuzzy "build quality" items and that the ES has buttons with wee lights
in them. One difference might be that I think the ES deck has a current
pulse D/A converter and the 940 has a lower quality hybrid pulse D/A
converter but I've been unable to confirm this - it seems strange because
all other Sony QS range stuff has always had current pulse D/A - very good
D/A converter IMHO.

I don't think your pal can go wrong with a QS 940 MD deck - I've got a Sony
QS CD player and find it to be superb quality, a good reliable compromise
between value, features and build. I don't think I could justify the extra
$$$ for the ES.

Hope this helps
