Hi folks I'm a new recruit to this list, so I thought I'd introduce myself and air a few concepts that I've come up with trolling through the web site... I got started with an MZ-1 back on 8th Feb 1993 (I found the original receipt last night, just call me "squirrel"), mainly for use for sound effects etc. for an amateur dramatics club I belonged to. I had always been tempted, but a bad experience resulting from failing to rewind one (of about 30) tapes for one performance decided me... Since then I've added a second-hand MZ-R2 and a Tascam 564 4-track. I've stuck mostly to theatre applications and recording my own material - now MD blank prices have fallen I could transfer my vinyl, but I can listen to CDs in the car, I don't jog, and I have a good soundcard, click removing software and a CD writer... Having looked at the "hacking pages" material on remote control signalling (Chris Iffland, Andy James, and Leon Woestenberg), and remote display interface signalling (Havard Torring), it has occurred to me that it should be possible to assemble a serially-controlled two-way interface that allows you both to control a (Sony) portable MD and also read back (some of) the LCD contents. I've now hacked about a bit with my MZ-R2 (which DOES have an LCD output, although the format is very slightly different from that published for the R3), and convinced myself that this is practical. However, having looked at the LCD signals from an MZ-R55 and and MZ-R90, they're quite different. Has anyone decoded these, or am I going to have to do it myself? And does anyone know if the other brands use similar signalling systems?
