This is the second time today I'm going to disagree with Jim Coon's answer to
a question posted here.
Paul Currie asked,
| How can I tell if a Minidisc recording was digitally recorded or not?
There is no reliable way.
Yes, at first, as Jim did, I was going to say that you could check its SCMS
status: SCMS-unlimited and SCMS-final tracks almost always come from digital
transfers and SCMS-penultimate tracks from analog transfers, but (1) the SCMS
bits could have been changed by TOC tricks and (2) a recording transfered di-
gitally could have an analog transfer in its ancestry.
| Obviously if the levels are all over the place and there are no track marks
| you would know l but how (without using high tech lab kit) can I ditinguish
| a competently executed analogue recording from a digital one?
No, those are not reliable indicators either. If the levels are all over the
place, the source could have been like that; moreover many units allow ad-
justing gain for digital input, so the levels of a digital recording could be
made to go all over the place as well. If there are no track marks maybe the
source was one long track, or the tracks were joined after recording.
There is no reliable way.
