That may vary depending on the exact unit. For example, with Sony decks, up
through the ATRAC 4.0 series, in record-pause they kept the disc spinning in
contact with the record head; more recent models do not and are safer to
leave in record-pause for long periods, not putting that kind of wear on
themselves nor on the disc.
So details depend on what your recorder does during auto-start mode.
