Someone mentioned the silicon grease about a year back when I asked
about the different brands and what the quality differance.
It was either Rob/Ralph or Jim.

(not exact words but.....)
They said that on the disc itself there is a thin layer of silicon
which aids recording. The cheaper MD blanks might not have 
this or this layer of silicon gease might not be as good so even though
the disk may sound the same the life time of the recording/disc could be
shortened by using a cheaper disc.

I always hated the Hi-space disks, from even holding the disc up to the
light you can see "patchy bits" as if parts of the disc were
thicker than others. TDK my fav brand but they are still 15 quid for 5.
Hi Space less than a pound each for an 80min blank. fine for
every day use with recordings that are not important.
