That said, I think in the long term, Minidisc is doomed. As soon
as someone comes up with a personal MP3 player with integrated
IBM Microdrive, I think MP3 will have found its 'killer
player'. Afterall, it'll be *tiny* with massive capacity. In fact,
does anyone know this hasn't happened already? (And please nobody
point out that you *can* slot a Microdrive into some PDAs, and then
use it to play MP3s. Thats clearly not what I meant)

Microdrives don't come cheap! And, I'll wouldn't want to drop one by
accident.

MP3 recorders, i.e. encoders, that encode at greater than 128 kbp in
realtime from a digital source may run into legal hurdles i.e. those RIAA
guys.

I woundn't care if MD died tomorrow in the US - as long as I can import
units and MD stuff from abroad I'm happy. If ppl want to stick with their
tapes or "CD-quality" mp3 players then so be it!
