If I were in that situation, then I would just copy from CD to MD via an
analogue conection. This is what I do when I copy MD to MD since I don't
have a MD player with digital out.

The quality loss from the analogue conection would be minor when compared to
the quality loss from MP3 compression...unless you were making 256kps MP3s
or something, and even then I'm not so sure.

Just because "digital" is a buzz word doesn't mean it's the best way to go.
For example, the cable TV service in my area switched from a 20 year old
system to a new digital cable system, and the quality is horrible.
Everything looks like a Hong Kong bootleg VCD. Sure we now have a fancy menu
driven cable box, but the picture is worse then before, and it was pretty
bad before.

If you for some reason, *must* use a digital conection, and the CD player
won't jive with the digital out on the soundcard, then converting the tracks
to .wav would give you far superior quality, and should bypass the problem.

Of course it would be rather time consuming....

Also, try playing the CD in Winamp instead of your normal CD player. I think
Winamp plays CDs back basicly as .wav files, instead of doing what Windows
CD player does which is just controling your CDROM and using it's built in
DAC, and sending though the passthrough in your sound card.

This is assuming you are using Windows..I have no idea.

"Let me explain a couple of things. Time is short. That's the
first thing. For the weasel, Time is a weasel. For the hero,
Time is heroic. For the whore, Time is just another trick.
If you're gentle, your Time is gentle. If you're in a hurry,
Time flies. Time is a servant, if you are its master. Time
is your god, if you are its dog. We are the creators of Time,
the victims of Time, and the killers of Time. Time is timeless.
That's the second thing. You are the clock, Cassiel."
