My 940's manual is also upstairs of my computer (and the 940 is also up-
stairs; Josh didn't say which floor his machine is on), but its Setup menu
has no "Demo" entry.

The Demo Mode scroll occurs only when the 940 is on with no disc inside and
is not monitoring, and no key on the panel nor the remote has been pressed
for about two minutes. Pressing any key stops the scroll and returns the
display to "No disc," but after two minutes the scroll will resume. Of
course, turning the unit off or inserting a disc will also replace the demo
scroll with (respectively) darkness or the appropriate display for that disc.

To disable Demo Mode, one has to chord the STOP and CLEAR buttons on the
panel. Chording them again reenables Demo Mode; disconnecting and recon-
necting power also reenables it, I believe. The chording has to be very
precise; one cannot just hold one of the two buttons down and then press the
other (only chords work, not arpeggios, so to speak). It probably is the
same on the JE440, but Mike can check his fluffy manual to be sure.
