Here's a response I got from the Government department:

It is the equipment to play them, ie a mini-disc player. The full list of
items collected for the RPI is confidential. On the NS website
(www.statistics.co.uk) under economy, prices and measures of inflation, RPI
and articles is the 2000 RPI price indicators at a level we can publish.
The 2001 RPI price indicators article will be put on the site in due
course.
Also on the NS website under latest figures, latest releases is the CPI
first release on 20 March. The brief notes under it gives the changes to
the 2001 RPI. Once this file is opened you can reveal the bookmarks to
help you find the changes.
