Well, I've tried a number of solutions. They all work more or less.
However, in order to remove noise, they necessarily distort the music to
some degree. My feeling is that unless the records are in very bad shape,
it is better to leave them alone.
The most important thing you can do is properly clean the records. A large
part of the noise comes from dust on the surface. Nitty Gritty makes
devices that use fluids to clean and then vacuum the record. These can make
a huge difference, but are a bit pricey if your collections is small.
CoolEdit (http://www.syntrillium.com/) can remove impulse noises and general
hiss and does an okay job. DartPro (http://www.dartpro.com) is designed
specifically for record restoration, but is also a bit pricey. They both
have demo programs available, so give them a try. But first clean your
records.
