I think that color choice and combinations may be cultural thing. In the mid
80's one of the leading Japanese auto manufactures was offering their red cars
with only BROWN upholstery and interior trim.
Sports car red and brown are not generally an acceptable combination to Americans
(myself included). The following year they changed the interior to gray.
I'm not sure that there is any direct tie in to consumer electronics, but it is
interesting that you can't order a Japanese car with the options that you want.
These cars are assembled in Japan and shipped with various combinations of
accessories.
The dealer "hunts" his computer for a car with with closest options that you
want. Often you are stuck purchasing expensive options that you do not want in
order to get the ones you do.
Americans usually have a car "built" for them. You can usually choose the color
combinations and most of the options.
I wonder if a person purchasing a car in Japan has the same limitations as
Americans do when it comes to Japanese autos?
Until Apple commuter decided to offer color choices in their iMacs, when it came
to electronics you were pretty much stuck with the color that they came in. I
imagine having to stock computers in 6 different colors is a retailer's
nightmare!
