Here is some food for thought.

Consider this experiment:
GIVEN:
A (home) minidisk deck has a digital in and out, interfaced to a
computer
with Sound Blaster card and digital SPDIF connectors. That computer is
also
loaded with CoolEdit 2000 which has, among other neat features, the
ability
to generate a 1000 Hz square wave and save it as a WAV file. Imagine
this
file is then recorded (again via digital SPDIF) by the MD and then
played
back from the MD into the PC again.
TO FIND:
Should the "send" and the "return" .WAV files be identical, since the
process is digital thoughout? If not, why not?
ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
To stimulate your thinking, please examine the actual results captured
as
screen grabs from directly out of CoolEdit:
The "send" file": http://www.hometown.aol.com/dbettsxx/Waves/send.jpg
The "return" file: http://www.hometown.aol.com/dbettsxx/Waves/return.jpg
Your thoughts would be greatly appreciated!
