I don't know much about the timer use, but if
you have a PC, Martin Danek's Winremote program
is excellent. Used it for quite a few years now.

You can do Batch (script) controlling, Batch Scripting
enables you to write sequence of commands (with time
synchronisation).
Other then the titling features, this is probably the
most awesome feature.
