I believe based on the information provided in the pressrelease, that by
backwards compatible they mean: Older units will be able to play recordings
made on the newer NetMD stuff as well as older recordings will play on the
newer machines. Older machines will not be able to take advantage of the NetMD
features and I highly doubt there will be a hardware addon (unless there are
some really good hackers out there with a lot of time on their hands) for older
units to take advantage of the higher transfer speeds. They did mention that
as far as recordings go, it will be ilke it is today. If something is encoded
in MDLP, it can only be played back on an MDLP capable player/recorder. but SP
will still work on all machines.

Hope this helps
