I've used the Sound Pro mics intermittently for a
couple of years now, and they are very good mics for
the money. I tend to record shows in clubs, outdoor
venues these days, so I use the Core Sound High End
Binaruals more often, with excellent results for the
most part. It's best if you have the $$ to have a set
of cardioids and a set of omnis available to meet the
specifics of the taping situation. The
interchangeable mic heads seems like a nice option.
But from what I've heard, the Sound Pro omnis are not
very good. Maybe the new Shure mics SP carries will
work better. Hope so. Sennheiser also makes a mic
set up that allows interchangeable capsules, and I
think the mics are somewhat stealthy (moreso than the
Nak 100/300).

As far as the Sound Pro cardioids go, there are a few
drawbacks to note:

1. They are unforgiving in breezy/windy environments.
If you plan to record a show in an outdoor venue
beware! Even the windscreens won't help much. The
lightest breeze will be picked up by these mics and
ruin your recording. It's inherent in the nature of
cardioid mics (pressure gradient pickup, something or
other).

2. They tend to handle bass less than well. While
most cardioids will not have trouble with bass signals
since they reject noise from behind/sides,etc, these
do for some reason. If you have very loud bass
sources you need to use the bass rolloff module set at
95Hz or higher.

3. You cannot move the mics around a lot while
recording. If you have them mounted in a hat or on
your glasses, you need to keep your head still.
Ideally use a T-bar and stand if possible, but from
what I have been told, the Sound Pro set up is not
very good.

As far as auto level control on the MD, DO NOT use it
when recording live rock shows, or even acoustic
shows. It is a convenience feature that typically
produces a terrible sounding recording. You need to
manually adjust the levels and leave them set once
they are at an acceptable level. Sound Pro offers
solutions in their battery modules to help mitigate
this problem on the Sonys, and even Radio Shack has a
volume control switch that I think could be used in
conjuction with the mics and the deck.

My 2 cents on that . . .
Dave
