Why did my company make the switch from Exchange to MDaemon ? :

1) Resonably prices solution, they dont' try to deplete your bank account
   like Microsoft
2) With Microsoft Exchange it takes 5mins to add in a user, MDaemon 1min
   (if that)
3) The new WebAdmin, now everyone can make their own changes, I spend less
   time supporting email.
4) We are running 2700 email accounts with 200 seperate domains MDaemon
handles that usage far better than Exchange.
5) MDaemon is constanly trying to improve their software and not fix
problems in it (Exchange 5.5 had 4 service packs and countless HotFixes).
OLD Program? MDaemon 5.0 just came out.
6) Support, for simple questions email support has always been helpful, for
big problems I've always been able to talk to a person after waiting a
reasonable amount of time on hold (like 5-10min). I don't even think
   Support is in Microsoft's Dictionary.
7) Simple backup and restore. With Exchange the only way to get it up and
running again was to rebuild the computer with Windows, then run a tape
backup restore (can we say 4-5hours of email down time). With MDaemon I
just mirror the MDaemon directory on another server inhouse. If my main
MDaemon server crashes, I assign the IP to the other server and start the
MDaemon service (can we say 4-5minutes of email down time).

To answer your second question I spend about an hour a day + supporting
email. My support consists of :
Resetting Passwords
Cleaning out mailboxes after the 56k customer was sent a 78MB attachment
Helping user error
Supporting Microsoft Outlook and Outlook Express
and Setting Up New Accounts, deleting old ones.

Let your IT Manager change to an "Enterprise Email server" and see what hell
on earth is.

Let me apologize in advance for presenting you all with an issue that does
not go directly to MD functionality. I can think of no better place to bring
this question.

We host a mail server for one of our clients, a major manufacturing
concern. We have about 1000 accounts on the server. Recently, my IT
Manager has been making disparaging remarks about Mdaemon. For some reason
she decided to call in a consultant to review our mail service and she has
learned from this "expert" that Mdaemon is a poor choice of mail servers for
our client. Based on conversations with the consultant and others she made
the statement that MDaemon is an, "old mail application that no one uses
anymore".

We have spent considerable time developing competence with MDaemon. The
problems we have had have been relatively minor and often the result of
human error not the software. Our client seems to think that if there is
any problem it must be the result of incompetence or flawed software. When
my IT manager passes the buck to MDaemon, it gives the client the impression
that all their problems will be solved if we move to a different email
platform.

How can I reassure my bosses and my client that MDaemon is up to the task,
that there will be problems from time to time but that moving to another
mail server platform or application provider will not insure flawless mail
service?

One final question - for those of you who administer email services - how
much time do you spend each week administering your mail service on
activities other than adding or modifying user accounts?
