Actually was in a similar situation when a coworker asked me why one over the other a few months backs. In my search I found this, and its closest thing I have to an official decree. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/259670

It's kind of a grey area between ConfigMgr and Windows Core (WDS) documentation. Do you happen to have a link to where IP helpers are recommended? If you don't have one, I don't blame you - I can't find it either. I have personally experienced multiple instances at customer sites, just over the past year, where DHCP options have simply not worked as expected, and caused erroneous error messages during PXE boot. As soon as we implement IP helpers, everything "just works." I am interested in gathering feedback from people on this mailing list to confirm or deny my current understanding on this topic. Do you use DHCP options or IP helper to point clients to the WDS/PXE service? Have you had a negative experience using one or the other?
