That sucks. No HW support. The CPU will spike every time it renders the EPG while trying to play video. Try disabling the deinterlacer, it's quite CPU intensive.
I don't want to make any more drastic changes to 0.5 but if you can work out how to build from the source repository (When your ISP is being friendly) then I can show you a few tricks that might help speed things up a bit.
