The Jakarta Post, February 16, 2007

WALHI clarifies The Jakarta Post's story on Thursday titled "Greens
divided on Riau deal" stated that: "The Indonesian Forum for the Environment
(WALHI) agreed with Greenomics, saying it would campaign against WWF in the
international arena and ask donor countries to suspend their financial aid to
the organization."
WALHI would like to state that the statement was not true.
We are not campaigning against the WWF as an institution.
WALHI supports the protection of local people's access to the forests. It
rejects the initiative on expanding the concession around the Tesso Nilo
National Park that would cut people's access to the forest and cause ecological
disaster. Walhi supports the campaign for a moratorium on logging and
environmental restoration to prevent greater ecological disaster.
WALHI stands for social transformation, people's sovereignty, and
sustainability of life and livelihoods. We are looking forward to working with
other environmental organizations to defend Indonesia's natural resources and
local communities from injustices carried out in the name of economic
development.
  Chalid Muhammad
WALHI National Executive Director
