Unbreakable: An Exhibition of, by, and from Young Photographers Thirty-two young photographers, all participants in the Twelfth Antara Photo-Journalism Gallery Workshop, are showing examples of their work at an exhibition entitled `Unbreakable': a broad and inclusive theme permitting many interpretations but suggestive of confidence and the strength of the human spirit. Since 1994, two years after the Antara Photo-Journalism Gallery was established in 1992, participants in the annual workshop have held an exhibition as an integral part of the process of their studies. Each participant is required to prepare a selection of their work and to submit this selection to a curatorial process managed by the students themselves, with input from the teachers and managers involved in the course. Staging an exhibition requires the development of a clear vision and strategy. The exhibition is intended to develop the necessary skills to hold such an exhibition, including establishing a system of management and forming working committees to implement this system. Working together, the participants take responsibility for the selection of materials, finding sponsors, and designing the exhibition. The exhibition itself is the culmination of the process, demonstrating the degree to which the participants have successfully acquired the necessary skills required to hold such an event successfully. Participants in this year's workshop have interpreted the chosen theme, represented by the single word `Unbreakable', in many different ways. One photographer has chosen to explore this theme through images showing single mothers engaged in their daily activities; another looks at the lives of young men in juvenile detention center; yet another looks at patients in a psychiatric hospital; another shows people with HIV living their lives to the fullest. The common thread in all of the work shown is the strength of the human spirit. However, through this exhibition, the participants are not merely portraying the strength of the human spirit in the subjects they explore: they are developing that same quality in themselves. If they are to become successful photojournalists, this quality will be vital on their journey. Oscar Motuloh Curator and Director Galeri Foto Jurnalistik Antara
