PRESS RELEASE OCTOBER 2007

Twenty three products awarded the UNESCO Seal of
Excellence award in Southeast Asia for 2007

Bangkok, October 2007 – The UNESCO Seal of Excellence
for Handicrafts has been awarded to 23 handicraft
products out of a total 71 eligible submissions in the
Southeast Asian region. An international panel of
judges and experts in design, marketing and handicraft
production gathered across four regions in Asia over
the last few weeks to judge over 400 entries for the
2007 UNESCO Seal of Excellence in Handicrafts (the
SEAL).

Today marks the announcement of SEAL awarded products
across the Asia region. Established to encourage
craft-workers to use traditional skills and materials,
the SEAL aims to ensure the continuation of
traditional knowledge, the preservation of cultural
diversity and the handicraft industries in the region.
Submissions are reviewed against five key criteria
incorporating excellence, innovation, authenticity,
marketability, eco-friendliness.

By recognizing such attributes in craftsmanship, the
programme aims to set quality standards, raise
international awareness and strengthen market demand
for Asian handicraft products.

The programme was established in Southeast Asia in
2001 by UNESCO and the ASEAN Handicraft Promotion and
Development Association (AHPADA) and was expanded to
Central Asia, to South Asia in 2004 and to East Asia
in 2006. This year, 109 products were awarded in Asia
out of over 400 submissions.

The Seal of Excellence in Southeast Asia

Seventy-one submissions received from Southeast Asia
this year kept the judging panel occupied for two days
at the SUPPORT Arts and Crafts International Centre of
Thailand (SACICT) in Ayutthaya. The range of
submissions was highly diverse, including
traditionally woven textiles and fibres, metal work,
wooden creations and ceramics. The products originated
from Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia and
Myanmar.

The successful 23 Southeast Asian SEAL awardees are
listed below. The success rate of submissions was 32%,
an increase from last year, suggesting higher quality
in the choice of submissions. Awarded products will be
on display at the SACICT Centre in Bangsai, and at
several upcoming exhibitions in Bangkok. Photos can be
seen on www.unescobkk.org/culture/craftseal
