Google has added another piece of search software to its arsenal, with the
launch of Google Patent Search.

The patent search site, launched as a beta on Wednesday night, is designed
to sift through the approximately 7 million U.S. patents by a variety of
parameters including filing date, issue date, patent number and inventor.

<snip>

Patents in the United States are issued by the U.S. Patent and Trademark
Office, which has its own patent search engine available on its Web site.
In order to create Google's patent search, which goes back to the 1790s,
the company converted the government site's data into what it claims is a
more searchable format.

Google launches U.S. patent search site

Google Patent Search, launched as a beta version on Wednesday night,
allows users to search the approximately seven million U.S. patents by
parameters including date, issue date, patent number and inventor.

The search site also has a rotating series of images from selected patents
from the 1916 patent of the tennis racket to the less-heralded 2004 patent
of the monkey-shaped camera bag.

The beta version looks back at inventions all the way to the 1790s but
does not include patent applications, international patents or U.S.
patents issued since mid-2006.

Google's site will compete with the search engine on the site of the U.S.
Patent and Trademark Office, the government body that issues patents.

Search Google Patent Search... for Google Patents

<http://arstechnica.com/news.ars/post/20061214-8419.html>

The patent search engine allows users to search through the full text of
over 7 million patents issued by the US Patent and Trademark Office and
works much like Google's Book Search.

The interface itself is clean and spartan, like Google's other products.
Users can type in a patent number or any other search term and are
presented with a list of responses like any other search. An advanced
search link offers the ability to search by inventor's name, assignee,
date filed, date granted, and other critera.

Searches of older patents like this 1894 patent for a trawl-line will turn
up an image of the original patent text along with relevant drawings. More
recent filings, such as this 2001 patent for welding equipment return text
abstracts and descriptions along with any images included with the patent
filing. Users can scroll through pages and zoom in just as they can using
Google Book Search.

December 14, 2006 (IDG News Service) -- If you've ever dreamed up an
ingenious new invention and then wondered if someone else has already made
it, Google Inc.'s new patent search offering is for you.

The new site, www.google.com/patents, lets anyone search for U.S. patents
by keyword, patent number, inventor and filing date. Users can view a
scanned image of the original patent and zoom in on pages.

The main search page displays five random patents each time the page is
visited. Recent inventions that have popped up include a toy skunk, a
pocket protector, a toupee and a doll that has delayed wetting and crying
action.

The U.S. Patent and Trademark Office already allows anyone to search its
site for patent documents. But Google's offering may have some advantages.

"The existing Web sites have patents that you can view, so it's not that
the information isn't there. The problem is finding it, and that's where
Google's expertise comes in," said Mike Overy, secretary for the Wessex
Round Table of Inventors, an inventors club in England. Overy formerly
developed products for Nokia Corp. and is now a freelance inventor.

Google said that like its Web search technology, the patent search site
uses a number of different signals to evaluate how relevant each patent is
to a user's query and then determines results with an algorithm.

How to Google the Wright patent

Google has launched a service that makes it easier to search for
patents granted in the US.

ZDNet
<http://news.zdnet.co.uk/itmanagement/0,1000000308,39285161,00.htm>

Unveiled on Thursday, Google Patent Search allows users to search by
keyword, patent number, inventor and filing date. Individual patents can
then be scrolled through and searched, and images within the patent can be
viewed and zoomed in on.

Google Patent Search takes its information from the public database of the
US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). Although this information is
openly available, it is currently difficult to search. Google hopes its
service can help inventors and programmers find out which innovations have
already been granted a patent.

It can be found here. This page displays images from five randomly
selected patents every time it is accessed. This includes patents on
tennis racquets, popcorn machines and the flying machine patented by the
Wright Brothers at the start of the 20th century. Interestingly, Google
credits the patent to "OLTVILLE WRIGHT", suggesting its text-scanning
system may struggle to read the older patent documents.

At present the system does not include patents that have been granted in
the last few months. Nor does it include patent applications that have not
yet been accepted or rejected.

Librarians Face Pay Cuts
Elizabeth Buie
Published: 15 December 2006

School librarians are warning that the single status job evaluation
process is leading to pay cuts in some authorities and a potential exodus
from the profession. There have been accusations that the whole exercise
is flawed because it fails to recognise the educational role of school
librarians.

In North Lanarkshire, where the evaluation process has been completed
earlier than in some other authorities, school librarians have been put
down a grade. This means that although the basic salary of around 20,000
will be conserved for three years, thereafter it will drop to 17,000.

Already, two of the 27 school librarians in the authority have resigned
from their jobs to retrain as primary teachers.

Unison, the union representing many school librarians and other school
staff affected by the evaluation office administrators, ICT back-up staff,
technicians, and outdoor instructors says it is very concerned that a
system intended to deliver equal pay for women seems to be delivering cuts
in the pay of already low-paid women in some cases.

Glyn Hawker, Unison Scottish Organiser, said: Obviously, we will look at
individual or group cases of detriment in specific authorities and, where
members are being unfairly treated for whatever reason, we will back
appeals and/or other appropriate action on their behalf.
