On a trolley history and new developments type of discussion group, yes
indeed there are those kinds of discussion groups, a discussion thread
regarding trolleys or trams on the one hand and light rail transportation
has been a part of the current fare on this Yahoo Groups list.

My posts regarding this topic in terms of database thesauri and the TRIS
Transportation database in particular are a part of this thread. In
thinking about the discussion of synonyms in this context, consider these
word groups as similar examples from other areas of knowledge.

Subject: Re: [Trolleys-RemovalAndRebirth] Re: [LightRail_Now] What is the
difference between a Electric Tram and a LRT

This word distinction is actually best described by the word synonyms.
Light rail may be more used to describe a mode of transportation, while
words like trolley, tram and streetcar describe an actual specific vehicle
that can be used in either singular or plural. Fields ranging from
creative writing to library science play a great deal of attention to
synonyms.

In the area of transportation, consider this discussion of the TRIS
thesaurus.

Transportation Research Thesaurus Improvements
<http://www.trb.org/TRBNet/ProjectDisplay.asp?ProjectID=656>

===============================

In 2001 TRB published NCHRP Report 450: Transportation Research Thesaurus
and User's Guide. The primary purpose of the Transportation Research
Thesaurus (TRT) is to provide a common vocabulary for producers and users
of TRB's TRIS database. Indexers can describe documents in a consistent
way, and TRIS users can successfully retrieve TRIS records in their areas
of interest by searching the thesaurus terms.

In addition to TRB, other organizations are using the TRT in a variety of
applications and platforms: the National Transportation Library Digital
Library catalog; the library catalog at the Harmer E. Davis Transportation
Library, University of California, Berkeley; the library catalog of the
Turner-Fairbank Highway Research Center; and the publications catalog of
the Texas Transportation Institute. Moreover, the TRT vocabulary is mapped
to other standard vocabularies, including the Library of Congress List of
Subject Headings and the International Transport Research Documentation
Thesaurus. The TRT has been approved by the Library of Congress as a
specialized vocabulary with the code "trt."

Although TRB has successfully implemented use of the thesaurus, it has not
had the resources to assume maintenance of the authoritative version,
which resides only with the original contractor, CDB Enterprises. A
thesaurus by its nature is a dynamic document to which new terms must be
added as they arise. Maintenance is no small matter, and TRB should have
the authoritative version of its valuable resource in-house. The proposed
project would allow TRB to develop a database to maintain the
authoritative version of the TRT and also to fully integrate it with the
new TRIS system that TRB is developing.

Another issue is making the thesaurus more readily available to potential
users. The current mechanism for distribution is the Viewer software that
was developed by CDB Enterprises in 1994/95 to be compatible with the
Windows environment at that time. Although the Viewer functions under
Windows XP, the interface is not optimal, and distribution of files to
individual PCs is cumbersome. The proposed project would support the
development of a web-based version of the thesaurus that would not need to
be installed and that could be updated more frequently than the Viewer.

The Transportation Research Thesaurus was developed in accordance with the
principles of the Guidelines for the Construction, Format, and Management
of Monolingual Thesauri (ANSI/NISO Z39.19-1993), an American national
standard developed by the National Information Standards Organization and
approved August 30, 1993, by the American National Standards Institute.
The standard specifies equivalence (synonymous), hierarchical and
associative relationships among terms and recommends print and screen
formats to show these relationships. Procedures for maintaining the
intellectual content of the TRT are detailed in Transportation Research
Thesaurus and User's Guide. The standards and procedures should guide
development of the proposed products.

Trends regarding increasing usage of the Internet are documented by the
Pew Internet and American Life Project
(http://www.pewinternet.org/trends.asp#usage). Such trends support the
notion of moving from use of specialized software to display the thesaurus
to use of a web browser.

Read more at the URL above.

Having a number of words that point in their meaning in the same direction
is very helpful. Being able in longer text to use terms like trolley,
streetcar, tram, light rail and the like rather than repeating the word
trolley twenty times makes writing more readable and digestible. The use
of the word tram in an early post in this thread was the result in part
that the original poster was from England, or the United Kingdom or Great
Britain or the Mother Country.

TRIS Facts (Transportation Research Board)
<http://tris.trb.org/about/>

The Transportation Research Information Services (TRIS) Database is the
world's largest and most comprehensive bibliographic resource on
transportation information. TRIS is produced and maintained by the
Transportation Research Board at the National Academy of Sciences.
TRIS contains over 600,000 records of published and ongoing research.
TRIS covers all modes and disciplines of transportation. Efforts have been
to increase coverage on the various modes and in the areas of planning,
environment, and human factors.

Each year over 25,000 records are added to TRIS.

TRIS is available through two commercial vendors Dialog and Ovid. Since
2000, most of the TRIS database has been available free on the Web as TRIS
Online through the Bureau of Transportation Statistics' National
Transportation Library's Web.

The Research in Progress records in TRIS are available in a searchable
database through TRB's RiP Web site.

TRIS is indexed with a standardized vocabulary from the Transportation
Research Thesaurus (TRT). Perform searches and view recently added terms
on the TRT Web page.

TRIS is sponsored by the State Departments of Transportation, the various
administrations in the U.S. Department of Transportation, and other
sponsors of TRB's core technical activities.

Transportation Research Thesaurus
<http://ntlsearch.bts.gov/tris/help.do?topic=about_trt>

The Transportation Research Thesaurus is a hierarchical, faceted
collection of concepts logically arranged in accordance with their
relationships to one another. This taxonomical approach puts like
intellectual content together. By selecting the most appropriate concept
in the intellectual order the work is identified with related works. This
thesaurus is used by indexers, content managers and librarians in the
transportation community. It is a nationally recognized standard.

The Transportation Research Thesaurus (TRT) was developed under NCHRP
Project 20-32 to provide a tool to improve the indexing and retrieval of
transportation information. The thesaurus covers all modes and aspects of
transportation. These terms are used in the indexing of the Transportation
Research Board's database the Transportation Research Information Services
(TRIS) and its web accessible version TRIS Online, by the National
Transportation Library and other transportation libraries.

In an earlier post in this same thread on this same discussion group I
also contributed these bits of wisdom.

Re: [Trolleys-RemovalAndRebirth] Re: [LightRail_Now] What is the
difference between a Electric Tram and a LRT

This distinction leads to an interesting anomoly in Philadelphia. The
subway surface route Kawasaki trolleys are single ender trolleys with a
trolley pole that operate part of their route underground and the
remainder above ground mostly on the steet with the exception of part of
route 36 and the loops at the end of the subway surface routes. Similar
Kawasaki cars that are double ender trolleys that may be shorter than the
ones on the subway surface lines run primarily on private track either
in the center of the highway on a medial strip near 69th Street or away
from the highway on the routes to Media (line 101) and Sharon Hill (line
102). Furthermore a stretch of the Sharon Hill line is on the actual
street as are the final blocks of line 101 in the town of Media. Are the
subway surface cars trams and lines 101 and 102 trams?
