Google Makes Another Investment in the Internet in China

[excerpt]
SHANGHAI, Jan. 5 - Like almost all of the American Internet giants
that have ventured this far, Google is losing in China. So too, are
eBay, Yahoo and Amazon. But flush with cash, Google - the world's
leading search engine company - is beginning to invest heavily in
research and development here. In its latest move, announced Friday,
Google struck a deal to invest about $5 million in one of the
country's fastest-growing Internet start-ups, Xunlei.com, according
to people close to the deal.
That follows another hook-up this week, when Google said it would
team with China Mobile, the country's dominant, government-owned
mobile telephone carrier, to offer mobile search services using the
Internet.
In 2005, the company lured Kaifu Lee, the former head of Microsoft
research in China, to shore up its base here. And now the company is
looking to sprinkle investments in start-ups and partnerships with
Chinese companies.

Attack of the Zombie Computers Is Growing Threat
By JOHN MARKOFF
Networks of thousands or even millions of PCs are being
hijacked by malicious programs to commit Internet crimes.
http://www.nytimes.com/2007/01/07/technology/07net.html?th&emc=th
"... The financial danger can be seen in a technical report presented
last summer by a security researcher who analyzed the information
contained in a 200-megabyte file that he had intercepted. The file
had been generated by a botnet that was systematically harvesting
stolen information and then hiding it in a secret location where the
data could be retrieved by the botnet master.
The data in the file had been collected during a 30-day period,
according to Rick Wesson, chief executive of Support Intelligence, a
San Francisco-based company that sells information on computer
security threats to corporations and federal agencies. The data came
from 793 infected computers and it generated 54,926 log-in
credentials and 281 credit-card numbers. The stolen information
affected 1,239 companies, he said, including 35 stock brokerages, 86
bank accounts, 174 e-commerce accounts and 245 e-mail accounts...."

Media Education Kit published by UNESCO

"Media Education: A Kit for Teachers, Students, Parents and
Professionals" has been published in English and French by UNESCO.
The kit is partly a product of the MENTOR project initiated by UNESCO
and supported by the European Commission.
What should Media education be like? Who should provide it? How
should it be included in a curriculum? Beyond schools, do families
have a say in the matter? Can professionals be involved and how? What
strategies can the public adopt to deal with the benefits and the
limitations of media?
These are some of the questions addressed by the kit. It
proposes a prototype of media education curriculum for the basic
qualification of secondary school teachers, but it also extends its
modular approach and key concepts (production, language,
representation, public) to adults outside the school system, be they
parent, media professional or decision-maker. In addition to a
teachers' manual and accompanying students' handbook, the kit also
contains a manual for parents as well as a handbook on ethical
relations with professionals and one on internet literacy.
