DATABASE: SEARCHING: TECHNIQUES:
Worldcat as an Internet Search Engine as Compared to Worldcat as an OCLC
FirstSearch Database: A Very Rough Sketch Comparison

The comments below the line were posted to another discussion group on
which the topic of Worldcat came up in a discussion of finding a copy of a
specific source. Talking in my presence about Worldcat is like dangling
cheese in front of a mouse or dangling the mouse (not computer) in front
of a cat. I hope readers will find these comments useful, particularly in
terms of comparison of the types of searching capabilities found in better
bibliographic database search software as compared with internet search
engines searching protocols and search capabilities. Add to the comments
below the abilities such as limiting searches to specific parts of records
like subject headings, abstracts, title and so forth and there is a very
powerful tool in Worldcat in the FirstSearch searching environment.

These are the fields one can limit by in search steps in Worldcat in
FirstSearch:

Worldcat is a very powerful tool and product of OCLC. It was first
present on the public internet as a citation result of searches in Google
search results of book and other library held titles and only with the
Find in a Library feature that provided nearby library listings for
sources found in Worldcat through Google searches.

OCLC in the past year or so merged with the Research Library Group and
proceeded in November of 2006 to remove the free public RLG search of
combined research library catalogs, REDLIGHTGREEN, from the internet.
Well before doing that, for the first time ever, the entire Worldcat
database was made available with a limited search engine style software on
the internet in its entirely.

Worldcat on the Internet
<http://www.worldcat.org>

For those of you who work at an academic institution with access to
Worldcat as an OCLC First Search database, the version on the internet is
not nearly as powerful. In particular, the FirstSearch Worldcat database
facilitates searching with multiple search steps that can be combined, and
also features the use of proximity operators in searchs so that one can
find words within so many words of other words and there are more power
searching features in the professional First Search version of Worldcat.

More children learn more than one language
Updated 1/10/2007 8:06 AM ET
By Beth Walton, USA TODAY
<http://www.usatoday.com/news/education/
2007-01-09-language-children_x.htm>

Azure Warrenfeltz is fluent in Japanese and Spanish. She also can
understand bits of French, German, Arabic and Italian, and she soon hopes
to learn some Mandarin Chinese.
Azure is 4 years old.

"I'm smarter than my father. He can only speak one language. Muchas
gracias!" she says playfully.

In today's globalized world, Azure is one of many young American children
whose parents insist her education include foreign languages.

"It's such a global environment now, you never know what you might need,"
says Azure's mother, Julie Warrenfeltz, who started schooling her daughter
in foreign languages when she was 6 weeks old. "I wanted to make sure she
had every tool and every benefit at her disposal.

"She couldn't hold a violin, she couldn't stand upright, but I wanted her
to do something," says Warrenfeltz, owner of Petite Ambassadors Language
School in Jacksonville.

Not only is learning a foreign language easier for children than it is for
adults, but children who are exposed to other languages also do better in
school, score higher on standardized tests, are better problem solvers and
are more open to diversity, says Franois Thibaut, who runs The Language
Workshop for Children, which has nine schools around the East Coast.

The Wikipedia

The Wikipedia has had both strong advocates and those who are either
deeply concerned about this source or strongly against its use.

There is incorrect information in the Wikipedia. The Wikipedia does have
problems. The creator of the Wikipedia plans to start a new work that
will be created to address some of the Wikipedia's faults. Much
ink has been spilled in criticism of the Wikipedia. One will not hear
much about that side of the picture from me as I use this free tool to
death. Errors have been found in the Britannica Encyclopedia as well.

These Google searches will provide sources of discussions of errors in the

searching with internet search engines.

Indeed I have posted much about the Wikipedia and used it in posts
frequently as illustrated at this URL:

Indeed just this week a Information Science and Library Science professor
confessed to having second and positive thoughts about using the Wikipedia
on the EDTECH discussion group of the H-Net discussion group network.

"I have definitely changed my tune about wikipedia. I still teach kids to
be more than a little sceptical - but you absolutely can't beat it as a

Finally, the Wikipedia covers huge numbers of topics that are unfindable
in other encyclopedias, particularly those one pays for like Britannica.

How likely would one be to find this article in the Britannica?

Route 15 (SEPTA)
>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Route_15_(SEPTA)>

In 1992, SEPTA replaced trolley service along Routes 15, 23, and 56 with
buses. The line has been reopened as a trolley service in September 2005
after having been served by buses for thirteen years. To prepare for the
resumption of trolley service, SEPTA spent a total of $88 million,
including rehabilitating the tracks and repairs to the overhead wires. The
rolling stock for Route 15 consists of PCC II cars, which are 1947 PCC
streetcars that had been completely rebuilt by the Brookville Equipment
Company as a cost of $1.3 million per trolley. The rebuilt trolley
includes the addition of air conditining and regenerative breaking. [1]

Even the Onion has come to admire its long standing spirit of American

Wikipedia Celebrates 750 Years Of American Independence
Founding Fathers, Patriots, Mr. T. Honored
July 26, 2006 | Issue 4230
<http://www.theonion.com/content/node/50902>

NEW YORK

Wikipedia, the online, reader-edited encyclopedia, honored the
750th anniversary of American independence on July 25 with a special
featured section on its main page Tuesday.

"It would have been a major oversight to ignore this portentous
anniversary," said Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales, whose site now boasts
over 4,300,000 articles in multiple languages, over one-quarter of which
are in English, including 11,000 concerning popular toys of the 1980s
alone. "At 750 years, the U.S. is by far the world's oldest surviving
democracy, and is certainly deserving of our recognition," Wales said.
"According to our database, that's 212 years older than the Eiffel Tower,
347 years older than the earliest-known woolly-mammoth fossil, and a full
493 years older than the microwave oven."

"In fact," added Wales, "at three-quarters of a millennium, the USA has
been around almost as long as technology."

The commemorative page is one of the most detailed on the site, rivaling
entries for Firefly and the Treaty Of Algeron for sheer length.
Subheadings include "Origins Of Colonial Discontent," "Some Famous Guys In
Wigs And Three-Cornered Hats," and "Christmastime In Gettysburg." It also
features detailed maps of the original coloniesincluding Narnia, the
central ice deserts, and Westerosas well as profiles of famous American
historical figures such as Benjamin Franklin, Special Agent Jack Bauer,
and Samuel Adams who is also a defensive tackle for the Cincinnati
Bengals.

4. DATABASE: SEARCH: TECHNIQUE: Thinking About Poker Skills

DATABASE: SEARCH: TECHNIQUE:
Thinking About Poker Skills

WEBBIB0607

A significant amount of content has been posted to Net-Gold regarding
searching technique both using internet search engines and using
bibliographic databases.

22search+technique%22+and+%22net-gold%22&qt_s=Search>

A shorter URL for the above link:

<http://tinyurl.com/37d3d9>

One of my all time favorite search requests came around the middle of the
1980s decade and the request was for a literature review for a doctoral
dissertation about the impact economically, on attendence and on the
overall prosperity of college varsity athletic programs of the college
mascot, the Penn State Lion or the Temple Owl and the like. There simply
was no literature written on this subject then and I doubt there is now.

Part of searching skill is knowing when the precise topic one is studying
is so precise that there is no literature to be found there and then
deciding what is a good topical approach that would get one as close as
possible to the topic to find some literature that might be applied to the
more precise information need. Consider a recent request on another list
that seeks a literature on elite poker players and mental skills. The
first problem with this request is that a search of elite poker players,
even with truncation used to capture both the singular and plural of
player is that there are simply no citations for that phrase in a generous
group of databases selected for the search. Zero!!! The second problem
is that mental skills is a very specific phrase. Could there be some
terms that one could use to tease us in that direction without being so
precise and singular in this terminology approach.

To state this more simply, how about looking at plain old poker against
some terms for mental or thinking.

Consider these terms for the mental side of this equation:

mental or thinking or thought or memory or skills or processing or
cognitive or cognition or ability

Now searching these terms where they must be in the document title or in
the subject headings assigned for them and requiring the same conditions
for poker leads to sixteen citations of varying quality, but a better
place to start than zero for just one of your search parameters in the
original search request.

Consider these citations:

Those skilled at counting will note that the number of articles above is
less than sixteen. One drops articles that use ones words, but are about
a totally different topic and one drops the same article in more than one
occurance from different databases, keeping only the first occurance.

This is a limited start in terms of number of citations, so where can one
go from here. Combining any mention of poker in a record with any mention
of our terms for mental skills leads to almost 300 citations, but a very
sorry lot in terms of usefulness in a glance at a sampling of those
records.

So perhaps a search of playing cards or card playing against our mental
terminology in a focused search of subject headings or titles might be a
better move, oops, sorry moves are checkers or chess, so maybe we had
better say, might be a better play, but then would examining mental skills
in checkers or chess be helpful to this search of playing and mental
skills? Perhaps.

One of the critical areas of searching is thinking through a topic in
terms of what is possible given the amount of literature available for
each parameter of a search. In the example above, there is a broad body
of literature on mental skills and much more on the approximations of this
phrase in synonomous language. This side of the search is rich in
synonyms and the amount of literature for each and for all of them.
There just were no citation hits for elite poker players, so one needs to
determine how one can get somewhat near that concept and use those
approximations in terms of the mental skill literature that relates to
those approximations. Then one will apply these citations as tools to
extract what one can to apply to the research about elite poker player
mental skills.

Your draw.

meaning that you can use them to display Real and QT content in programs
that support DS. (Such as WMPlayer for inclusion inline in a PowerPoint
stack.)

The disadvantage is that you can not have Real or QT installed on your
computer with these filters. That isn't a huge loss (IMHO) if you don't
have Real, but QTPro is certainly a tool I like to use for splitting QT
files, and extracting tracks.

But if you have the "luxury" of having a separate laptop just for
presentation purposes, QTA and RA are "must have" codecs. I would also
suggest the excellent h.264 DivX/XviD handling of FFDShow. (Ever have an
.avi wrapper you couldn't open and it says that you don't have the right
codec installed?)
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow

If you download YouTube and Google video files, they are in Flash Video
format. You'll need FLVSplitter to decode them:
http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=82303&package_id=1
83318

(G7Z is an advanced "zip" format. You have to install 7-zip to open the
packages: http://www.7-zip.org/)

(If you don't yet know how to download UTube and GV videos, use
Google...)

I do a LOT with video. I use XviD now for all of my own videos as
nothing compresses and decompresses better. I have a JVC EverIO
camcorder, and pull the videos from the camera in MPEG2 format, run them
through AutoGordianKnot (AGK) and turn them into XviDs. It's perfect for
storing videos of my kids growing up, sharing video files for work, and
creating video podcasts (vlogs) to be used on my MediaPlayers. BUT - you
have to have a filter like FFDShow installed to watch them.

I don't want to be responsible for your (the reader) following of
copyright law. So if it isn't yours, don't download it or copy it. But
if it is yours, these are really the BEST tools for handling video. I
use a TON of original video in my presentations when I speak, and this
is how I put it together...

Good luck!

KNOWLEDGE MANAGEMENT :
COUNTRIES: MALAWI:
Knowledge Assets and Contribution to Economic Performance

Knowledge Assets and Contribution to Economic Performance
by Rhodrick Junaid
Nyasa Times
<http://www.nyasatimes.com/BREAKING-NEWS/117.html>

Over the years, the Malawi Government has been sending its people abroad,
mainly the UK, to study in various fields of excellence at the
postgraduate level through award of scholarships. In 2006, the Human
Resource Department awarded scholarships to more than 20 students to
pursue master degrees in various fields at UK Universities. This month,
(January 2006), another group of scholars will be sent to the UK to join
the February intake. Whatever the definitions of knowledge and knowledge
management are or are perceived to be, it is a known fact that economies
in this era cannot survive without implementing or adopting these
concepts. In today's knowledge economy, many tasks are being executed
through the creation of new knowledge. As already stated, in yesterday's
economy, planners and economists used factors of production which were
mainly physical in nature, such as labour, land and machines. The mix of
these factors used to generate wealth and create value in the economy.
However, the current business scenario is very different. On the business
landscape of the 21st century, knowledge or knowledge assets will take
precedence as compared to physical assets.

It is quite encouraging to see Malawi taking right steps in this
direction, especially in training and empowering people with the right
knowledge, hence creating a vast pool of knowledge assets. With the
economy's growing needs of a more sophisticated information society, it
will necessitate that all players are prepared to do business in an
innovative fashion and simultaneously ensure quality network, service and
care for the discerning Malawian consumers. At the business level, there
is need for a strategic change that will fundamentally and profoundly
affect the economy, with intellectual capital as a much more important
asset. Thus three things must be the key for the next generation Malawian
economy entrenched in our businesses: Customer Relationship Management
(CRM), Knowledge Management and Financial Excellence. All these can be
achieved by empowering our people educationally.

NEW PROVIDENCE, N.J.-(Business Wire)-January 17, 2007 - Bowker, the global
leader in bibliographic information management, today announced that its
Global Books In Print database has been selected by Microsoft
(NASDAQ:MSFT) to provide the basic and value-added data that will enhance
descriptions of books incorporated in the new Live Search Books search
service from Microsoft.

Live Search Books, which was released in beta form by Microsoft in
December, is part of an ambitious project by Microsoft to scan millions of
books and index them for online searching. The search engine allows users
to search the full-texts of scanned books and is currently restricted to
out-of-copyright books scanned from the collections of leading libraries
such as The British Library, the University of California and the
University of Toronto. In a later release, Microsoft will also add
copyright works that publishers have given permission to include in the
project.

Bowker's Global Books In Print provides complete bibliographic details on
more than 14 million books that are organized in its global database
according to 30 powerful criteria. As part of the content licensing
agreement with Microsoft, Bowker is also making available its "Publisher
Authority" database, which contains company and contact information for
more than 200,000 publishers worldwide, and a wide range of other
value-added data modules that offer detailed descriptions of books, author
biographies, award citations, book review citations, cover images, tables
of contents and lists of bestsellers dating back to 1920.
