A New On-line Database of British Transfer-Printed Pottery
2006 by Maine Antique Digest
<http://www.maineantiquedigest.com/articles/jan07/f-database0107.htm>
The Transferware Collectors Club (TCC) launched a new database of British
transfer-printed patterns during its annual meeting, October 19-22, 2006.
The database provides its members with easy on-line access to a valuable
source of information about these patterns. Patterns are illustrated with
detailed views of the whole item on which the pattern is found, the center
pattern, the border, and any marks. Patterns may be searched under pattern
(and series) name, maker's and factory name, border, and predominant
features. Much additional information and a list of references are
included.
At this time over 500 patterns have been entered, but there are thousands
more to come. Many of the patterns already entered have not previously
been recorded. The editors have assigned names and labeled each new
pattern "Provisional" in order to draw attention to the newly established
name and to allow updates to be made.
One of the great advantages of the on-line database is the ease with which
any pattern record can be quickly updated. Contrary to published reference
books, where researchers must wait for the next edition of a book or list
to be published, updates and additions to the on-line database will be
continuously current. Care is being taken to establish the validity of all
attributions.

N.C. Bar Files Amended Ethics Complaint Against D.A. Who Prosecuted Rape
Allegations Against Duke Lacrosse Team Members
NORTH CAROLINA STATE BAR V. MICHAEL B. NIFONG
January 24, 2007
An amended ethics complaint is filed against Durham County, N.C. District
Attorney Michael Nifong, whose office filed charges against members of
Dukes Lacrosse team. The new charges allege that Nifong: 1) made
approximately 150 statements to the media that he "knew or reasonably
should have known... had a substantial likelihood of prejudicing the
criminal adjudicative proceeding;" 2) knowingly withheld exculpatory DNA
results that exonerated the accused defendants; and 3) misled the court.

Filmmaker paved way for arrest by studying 1964 killing of two black

WASHINGTON -- They make an odd pair, the battle-hardened 63-year-old black
Vietnam War veteran from rural Mississippi and the shy, serious-minded
38-year-old white CBC filmmaker who hails from small-town Ontario.
But Thomas Charles Moore and David Ridgen were calling each other
"brother" yesterday after a 19-month odyssey that led this week to an
arrest in the horrific 42-year-old killings of two black teenagers, whose
bodies were found in the Mississippi River.
One of the victims was Mr. Moore's younger brother, Charles. He was killed
along with his friend, Henry Dee, a civil-rights worker. Both were 19.
The two young men had been hitchhiking in May of 1964 when they were
picked up by members of the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan, beaten, bound
and dumped in the Mississippi River, weighed down with an engine block and
steel rails.
Yesterday, in Jackson, Miss., James Ford Seale, a 71-year-old onetime
sheriff's deputy, was charged with kidnapping and conspiracy in their
deaths. He pleaded not guilty.
Long believed to be dead, Mr. Seale was found alive only when Mr. Moore
travelled back to his hometown in Franklin County, Miss., in July of 2005
accompanied by Mr. Ridgen, who was making a documentary on the case, one
of several cold cases from the civil-rights era.
"Without you, David, it probably never would have happened," a sometimes
teary-eyed Mr. Moore said after a news conference at the U.S. Justice
Department where the charges were announced by Attorney-General Alberto
Gonzales. "I wouldn't be here. I would just be a simple retired
sergeant-major."
For Mr. Ridgen, a former teacher from Arnprior, Ont., who has been making
documentaries for the CBC since 2001, the story begins in July of 2004. He
was working on a film about Edgar Ray Killen, the Klan member arrested in
the 1964 deaths of civil-rights workers James Chaney, Andrew Goodman and
Michael Schwerner; the case was featured in the film Mississippi Burning.
Looking through the CBC's archive of documentary footage from the period,
Mr. Ridgen came upon Summer in Mississippi, a 1964 documentary about the
disappearance of the three civil-rights workers.
The film shows a fisherman discovering a body floating in the Mississippi
River, believed to be one of the three missing men, two of whom were
white.
It turned out to be Charles Moore.
