Train Wreck: How Millions of Dollars Were Wasted Trying to Fix a North
Philly Rail Station.

Few would know it from its current condition, but North Philadelphia
Station was once an elegant gateway that provided access to the city for
thousands of rail passengers daily. Today it's seedy, sometimes dangerous
and offers poor connections to nearby rail, subway and bus services.
Worse, it is also potentially a squandered opportunity to revitalize a key
segment of the Avenue of the Arts North and a waste of millions of dollars
recently invested in the station.
North Broad, from Lehigh Avenue to Glenwood, has the city's richest
concentration of transit outside of Center City and the area around 30th
Street Station. Three rail stations and one subway station serve Amtrak
while SEPTA's R5, R6, R7 and R8 lines and the Broad Street Subway also
connect to several bus lines. Yet there are no signs indicating the
presence of the station, which sits upon the most heavily traveled
intercity train route in the United States.
The tunnel leading toward the platforms reeks of urine and its walls are
covered with chipped paint, cracks and graffiti. The platforms aren't much
better. There, the shed, constructed as part of the 1999 station
renovation, is encased in glass panes that are cracked or missing
altogether. Those that are intact are covered with the scrawl of markers
and graffiti scratches.
It wasn't supposed to be this way.
The 1901 Renaissance Revival station is the oldest surviving depot on
Amtrak's Northeast Corridor. For decades, the station bustled. Kurt Bell,
archivist for the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, estimates that in 1930
there were as many as 4,000 passenger boardings or departures on 40
different trains each day. But nationwide, ridership fell steadily in the
postwar years. With the breakup of the Pennsylvania Railroad in the 1960s;
the demise of its successor, the Penn Central Railroad in the 1970s;
neglect; and an ever-dwindling number of Amtrak passengers, the station
has been in a perpetual state of decline for more than four decades.
While more than 3.5 million Amtrak passengers used 30th Street Station in
2006, the railroad estimates only 605 passengers used the North
Philadelphia Station. Down from 1,399 in 2005 and 3,879 in 1998, that's
less than one person getting on and one person getting off an Amtrak train
each day.
The station's decline is both a reflection of and contributor to North
Philadelphia's changing fortunes and the steep deterioration of North
Broad as one of the city's most vital commercial and cultural corridors.

North Philadelphia station
>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North_Philadelphia_station>
North Philadelphia is a railroad station on the Northeast Corridor in
Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. It is an above ground station located at 2900
North Broad Street at Glenwood Avenue in the North Philadelphia section of
the city. It is formerly known as the Germantown Junction Station. SEPTA
Regional Rail accounts for most of the station's service, and a few Amtrak
trains stop each day as well.
Station layout and service
The station is located immediately north of where SEPTA's R8 Chestnut Hill
West line diverges from the Northeast Corridor, which carries SEPTA's R7
Trenton line. Platforms are located on both lines, a short distance away
from each other.
On the Northeast Corridor, there are two high-level center-island
platforms that serve four tracks. The R7 Trenton trains make regular stops
at these platforms. The station and tracks are owned by Amtrak and a
limited number of Amtrak trains make scheduled stops at this station.
On the Chestnut Hill West line, which is owned by SEPTA, a pair of
low-level platforms serves R8 trains, which normally treat North
Philadelphia as a flag stop.
The station is within a few blocks of the North Broad station on SEPTA's
Main Line (formerly belonging to the Reading Company), and the North
Philadelphia subway station on SEPTA's Broad Street Line. The station has
SEPTA ticket offices, retail shops and restaurants, and access to Broad
Street area businesses. The SEPTA R7 and R8, as of 2006, had 219 average
weekday boardings and 245 average weekday alightings.[1]
Architecture
The station building is on the National Register of Historic Places and
the Historic American Building Survey. It was built from 1896 to 1901 for
the Pennsylvania Railroad with Theophilus Parsons Chandler, Jr. as the
architect, according to the Philadelphia Architects and Buildings project.

North Philadelphia Station was a four or so block walk from Baker Bowl and
from the Reading Railroad North Broad Street Station. North Philadelphia
Station was about a ten to tweleve block walk from Connie Mack Stadium.
The last game was played in Baker Bowl in the middle of the 1938 baseball
season when the Phillies moved to Connie Mack Stadium and shared that park
with the Philadelphia Athletics who moved from Philadelphia after the 1955
season.

Connie Mack Stadium
>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Connie_Mack_Stadium>
The Athletics played in the stadium through the 1954 season and relocated
to Kansas City in 1955.
<snip>
The National League's Philadelphia Phillies had abandoned Baker Bowl in
mid-season 1938, and played at the stadium as co-tenants, playing a
doubleheader on July 4 that year, ultimately purchasing the park in the
winter of 1954 when the Athletics left Philadelphia, until the stadium was
closed after the 1970 season when the team moved to the then-new Veterans
Stadium. The final game played there, on October 1 with the Phillies
defeating the Montreal Expos 2-1 in 10 innings, was marred by people
literally wrecking the stadium before the game ended. In all, a special
post-game ceremony including a helicopter delivery to The Vet of home
plate was cancelled. The National Football League's Philadelphia Eagles
also played at the stadium during most of the 1940s and 50s, including the
1948 NFL Championship game, played in a blizzard where the home team
defeated the Chicago Cardinals 7-0 with the only score by a Steve Van
Buren touchdown, before moving to Franklin Field in 1958, which made
Connie Mack a baseball-only facility, and eventually to The Vet.
Connie Mack Stadium sat empty and unwanted for the better part of six
years, suffering fire on August 20, 1971 the same day the Connie Mack
statue was re-dedicated at Veterans' Stadium along with vandalism and
jungle-like growth of weeds. It was finally razed in 1976, while
Philadelphia was the central point of American Bicentennial celebrations
including the Major League Baseball All-Star Game at Veterans' Stadium.
The ballpark that was once a "church of baseball" is now the site of an
actual Christian church, the Deliverance Evangelistic Church.
