Life in America: A Portrait
By Ray Remington, Jr.
January 2007
<http://www.acap-peru.org/newsletter/
2007-01/life-in-america-a-portrait.html>
A shorter URL for the above link:
<http://tinyurl.com/2sm4ow>
Do numbers paint a portrait of a life style? Recently the U.S. Census
Bureau released the 999-page Statistical Abstract of the United States:
2007, providing a picture of some aspects of life as it will be in the new
year.
For example, in 2007 it is expected that adults and adolescents in the
United States will spend almost five months -- 3,518 hours -- exploring
the Internet, watching television, reading daily newspapers and listening
to music on various personal devices. They'll invest an average of $937 on
media.
Issued by the U.S. Census Bureau, the 126th annual compendium of amazing
facts and obscure details is not an easy read. The type is tiny, the
tables of data endless. Somewhere in there, America is buried -- the
habits, pastimes and future of its people.
Almost impenetrably thick, the report could keep trivia buffs, numbers
fanatics and trend forecasters going for months. Government statistics
coexist in the abstract with research by nonprofit organizations, private
industry and international agencies.
One of the main findings predicts that Americans will be more
electronically inclined -- or enslaved -- than ever in 2007.
They'll be parked in front of their TVs for 65 days and on the Internet
for more than a week, according to projections from a communications
industry forecast. They'll spend 41 days listening to radio.

Guide to Sources
<http://www.census.gov/compendia/statab/guide_to_sources.html>
Alphabetically arranged, this guide contains references to important
primary sources of statistical information for the United States.
Secondary sources have been included if the information contained in them
is presented in a particularly convenient form or if primary sources are
not readily available. Nonrecurrent publications presenting compilations
or estimates for years later than 1990, or types of data not available in
regular series, are also included. Data are also available in press
releases.
Valuable information may also be found in state reports, foreign
statistical abstract, which are included at the end of this appendix, and
in reports for particular commodities, industries, or similar segments of
our economic and social structures, many of which are not included here.
Publications listed under each subject are divided into two main groups:
"U.S. Government" and Nongovernment. The location of the publisher of each
report is given except for federal agencies located in Washington, DC.
Most federal publications may be purchased from the Superintendent of
Documents, U.S. Government Printing Office, Washington, DC, tel.
202-512-1800, (Web site <http://www.access.gpo.gov>) or from the
Government Printing Office bookstores in certain major cities. In some
cases, federal publications may be obtained from the issuing agency.

Brazil to test US$400 (300) Intel laptop in schools

SAO PAULO, Brazil: Intel Corp. said Tuesday its diminutive low-cost laptop
will be evaluated in Brazil next year alongside a cheaper alternative from
a nonprofit group seeking to bring computers to poor children worldwide.
The company said it would donate 700 to 800 of the US$400 (300) "Classmate
PC," to the government for a large-scale evaluation in schools. Intel has
already tested the computers on a smaller scale with students and teachers
in a poor neighborhood of Campinas, near Sao Paulo.
Elber Mazaro, marketing director for Intel in Brazil, said this marked the
first time the company had reached an agreement with any government for
this kind of testing.
The agreement to test the Classmate PC comes after President Luiz Inacio
Lula da Silva last month received a prototype of a US$150 (110) laptop
developed by the U.S. nonprofit group One Laptop Per Child.

The One Laptop Per Child project (OLPC) aims to distribute -- free of
charge -- millions of Linux-based laptop computers, complete with their
own power sources, to needy children in developing countries around the
world.
>From the Linux perspective, Nicholas Negroponte, head of the OLPC project
and former director of MIT Media Labs -- where the project originated --
has said that the OLPC project could lead to mass adoption of Linux,
making the OS as popular on the desktop as it now is on the server.

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. -- Forget windows, folders and boxes that pop up with
text. When students in Thailand, Libya and other developing countries get
their $150 computers from the One Laptop Per Child project in 2007, their
experience will be unlike anything on standard PCs.
For most of these children the XO machine, as it's called, likely will be
the first computer they've ever used. Because the students have no
expectations for what PCs should be like, the laptop's creators started
from scratch in designing a user interface they figured would be intuitive
for children.
The result is as unusual as -- but possibly even riskier than -- other
much-debated aspects of the machine, such as its economics and distinctive
hand-pulled mechanism for charging its battery. (XO has been known as the
$100 laptop because of the ultra-low cost its creators eventually hope to
achieve through mass production.)
For example, students who turn on the small green-and-white computers will
be greeted by a basic home screen with a stick-figure icon at the center,
surrounded by a white ring. The entire desktop has a black frame with more
icons.

of One Laptop per Child, (OLPC), the non-profit organization set up to
oversee the $100 Laptop project, will sign an agreement on working
together with local and international partners to deliver the new
technology to targeted schools in the least developed countries.
The $100 laptop is an inexpensive, robust computer, with open-source
software, very low power consumption, and the capacity to be powered by
hand cranking. It was unveiled at the World Summit on the Information
Society (WSIS) in Tunisia last November
