Press Release
National Database of Manuscripts to be Launched on 14th February, 2007
Press Information Bureau
Government of India
<http://pib.nic.in/release/release.asp?relid=24739>
India has an estimated 5 million manuscripts most of which lie unknown and
neglected. The National Mission for Manuscripts, set up by the Ministry of
Culture, Government of India works with the aim to locate, preserve and
promote the manuscript wealth of India. Its activities range from
conducting nation-wide surveys to unearth each manuscript, the
documentation and cataloguing of manuscripts and their conservation,
training personnel in manuscript studies, publishing important research on
manuscripts to organising lectures, seminars, debates for students and
workshops for children. For this, the Mission has established a network of
partner institutions across the country to take its activities to the
grassroots. The attempt is to involve people, academics, intelligentsia,
administrators, students and the general interested populace.
The National Mission for Manuscripts is organising a host of events in the
second week of February 2007 on the occasion of its fourth anniversary.
The most significant event is the launch of the much-awaited National
Database of manuscripts, along with the proclamation of 45 selected
manuscripts as the manuscript treasures of India.
1. Kritisampada: Launching of the National Database of Manuscripts
Perhaps the most important task that the Mission is faced with is the
creation of a database of all Indian manuscripts, within the country and
beyond. Given the vastness of India, and the age old tradition of writing,
debating and preserving the written word, documenting each manuscript is a
truly mammoth undertaking. A conservative estimate puts the number of
manuscripts at five million within India! The Mission has already
documented 1.8 million of these, and the data pertaining to these is
shortly to be made available online through the use of a software
developed for the purpose, the e-granthavali.
On 14 February 2007, Smt. Ambika Soni, the Minister for Tourism and
Culture will launch the online database. Thereafter, it will be open to
public at large, for search on the basis of title, author, script,
language, subject and material. The database hosts information on
individual manuscripts, manuscript collections and printed catalogues. The
database will be accessible both in Hindi and English. The National
Electronic Catalogue of Manuscripts, Kritisampada, will be available on
the internet through the Missions website -
<http://www.namami.org>
[Those receiving this post on February 13, 2007, please bear in mind that
this website will not open until February 14, 2007 and may not open until
later in the day. The site is not up at the time of this post.]
2. Vijnananidhi: Manuscript Treasures of India
The Mission has recognised as Vijnananidhi: Manuscript Treasures of India
such pioneering manuscripts that contain insights and discoveries and that
have, at different points of time, broken new ground in Indias knowledge
systems. Through the recognition of texts that record attainments in
disciplines such as the sciences, philosophy, scripture, history and the
arts, the Mission hopes to highlight their value and unique contribution
to Indias life and history and encourage greater efforts to preserve the
physical material of the manuscripts. The Mission plans to provide
suitable financial assistance to the repositories of the Manuscript
Treasures towards facilities for their proper storage and treatment,
digitize each of them as well as consider applications towards research
grants concerned with the study of these manuscripts. Some manuscripts
being proclaimed as Manuscript Treasures that are already a part of
popular awareness and interest are the Arthashastra at Oriental Research
Institute, Mysore, the Tarikh-i-Khandan-i-Timuria at the Khuda Bakhsh
Oriental Public Library (Patna) and the Gilgit manuscripts. These
proclamations will be made along with the launch of the National Database
at the India Islamic Cultural Centre by Smt. Ambika Soni, the Minister for
Tourism and Culture.

Michigan State University Kicks Video Games up a Degree
Touted as nation's first, new master's program to focus on 'serious' video
game design starting in fall.

No doubt more than a few agitated parents have accused their college-age
children of studying more PlayStation than history in this era of video
game mania. Now, Michigan State University students really can ditch
history and get a degree in gaming.
MSU will launch a master's degree in "serious" game design in the fall.
Building on the school's undergrad video game design specialization
started in 2005, the master's program claims to the first in the nation to
focus on serious games -- those for education, training or presenting a
message -- rather than purely entertainment.
The master's program aims to train students for a growing niche in the
game design field. Everyone from educators to executives is now often
turning to video games as a way to teach lessons and train workers.
Concepts for serious games range from programs that allow emergency
workers to practice making real-time lifesaving decisions, to a video game
that makes it fun for fifth-grade girls to learn about self-esteem and
maintaining a healthy body.
"Serious games are designed for a purpose beyond entertainment but for
areas such as learning, health or social change," said Carrier Heeter, the
MSU professor leading the program. "But the games still need to be fun;
otherwise, no one will play them."
Games good teaching tools
Serious games are gaining popularity for several reasons.
One is that kids who grew up playing Pac-Man and Pong are now reaching
their 30s and 40s. They are more likely to think of video games as
innovative, rather than a distraction.
Another reason is that video games are good teaching tools, Heeter said.
Games are sequential, teach patterns and offer progressive levels of
challenge.

According to new and revised data from the World Association of
Newspapers, newspaper circulation is growing and new newspapers are being
launched at a remarkable rate.
Global newspaper circulation up 9.95 percent over five years and 2.36
percent over twelve months Daily newspaper titles surpass 10,000 for first
time in history More than 450 million copies sold daily In excess of 1.4
billion paid-newspaper readers Total free daily circulation more than
doubles in five years Even in North America and Europe, both circulation
and the number of new titles have increased, according to the updated
data.
Timothy Balding, CEO of the Paris-based WAN, says "What we are seeing
completely contradicts the conventional wisdom that newspapers are in
terminal decline.... The fashion of predicting the death of newspapers
should be exposed for... nothing more than a fashion, based on common
assumptions that are belied by the facts."
The figures, according to the report, show:
Combined paid-for and free newspaper circulation increased globally 9.95
percent over five years, and 2.36 percent over one year, in 2005, the most
recent period for which full-year figures are available
North America showed a five-year circulation increase of 0.70 percent and
was virtually stable over one year

Providing health literature that is easy to understand is a challenge for

In December, the Virginia Health Information commissioned freelance writer
Marjolijn Bijlefeld to create brochures on medical procedures. The
Richmond-based organization, which publishes consumer friendly health
literature, planned to make those documents available on the Internet this
spring.
When Bijlefeld, who is based in Fredericksburg, submitted the first drafts
a few weeks later, she was asked to revise them - specifically, to make
them easier to understand.
While reviewing what she had written about laparoscopy, she considered
replacing "is punctured" with "is torn"; "diagnosis and/or treatment" to
"to find and treat."
Health-care professionals say it's a constant challenge to provide written
material that their audience will understand. Many Americans, they say,
have low "health literacy," in part because many people have low basic
literacy skills.
On the Peninsula, about 25 percent of adults 25 years of age and older are
at or below a fifth-grade reading level, according to the Newport
News-based nonprofit Peninsula READS.
Low health literacy often is linked to poor communication between patients
and health-care providers - which can lead to mishandling of medication,
more hospitalizations and, ultimately, higher health-care costs. According
to the Center for Health Care Strategies, Inc., a New Jersey-based
nonprofit, low literacy resulted in an estimated $32 to $58 billion in
additional health care expenditures in 2001.

Medical terminology
>From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
<http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Medical_terminology>
Medical terminology is a vocabulary for accurately describing the human
body and associated components, conditions, processes and procedures in a
science-based manner. This systematic approach to word building and term
comprehension is based on the concept of: (1) Word roots, (2) prefixes,
and (3) suffixes. The word root is a term derived from a source language
such as Greek or Latin and usually describes a body part. The prefix can
be added in front of the term to modify the word root by giving additional
information about the location of an organ, the number of parts, or time
involved. Suffixes are attached to the end of a word root to add meaning
such as condition, disease process, or procedure.

What is a Medical Transcriptionist?
A medical transcriptionist transcribes tape recordings made by physicians
or other health care professionals. The transcribed tapes are used for
medical reports, including patient history and physical examination
reports, autopsy reports (medical examination of a body to determine cause
of death), or referral letters (professional recommendation).
Medical transcriptionists usually listen to the recordings on a headset
and use a foot pedal to pause the recording when needed. While listening,
they type the text into a computer and edit for grammar and clarity. Once
they have finished transcribing the document, they return it to the
physician for review and approval. These documents then officially become
part of the patients file.

Researching Medical Literature on the Internet -- 2005 Update
By Gloria Miccioli
LLRX
<http://www.llrx.com/features/medical2005.htm>
The proliferation of medical websites is good news for the researcher with
a small to non-existent medical collection. Legal researchers often have
to consult medical sources, so it is fortunate that the Internet provides
free access to a great deal of the medical literature, either in full text
or citation/abstract format, and that it offers search capabilities good
enough to fulfill most information needs. In addition, public demand for
medical information on the World Wide Web continues to grow. Many
professionally-oriented health care sites have evolved to meet consumer
needs, and consumer-oriented sites often include professional literature.
Journals, dictionaries, textbooks, indexes - all can be found on the Net
in growing numbers. The sources are varied; they include publishers,
government agencies, professional organizations, and health libraries, to
name a few.1 In addition, more and more of this information is being
offered for free, which is not the trend in other subjects, particularly
business and law.
With so many medical web sites to search, how does a researcher know which
to choose? It depends on what you are looking for. Journal articles make
up an extremely important category of the medical literature because they
contain the latest research. MEDLINE, one of the jewels of medical
research, is the National Library of Medicine's electronic index that
provides bibliographic references to some 4800 American and foreign
biomedical journals. Most records are from English-language sources or
have English abstracts. The database contains over 12 million citations
and dates back to the mid-1960s.

LADY LAKE, Fla., Feb. 12 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Florida Gov. Charlie
Crist today announced a $100,000 pledge made by Indianapolis Colts owner
Jim Irsay to the Florida Disaster Recovery Fund, managed by nonprofit
Volunteer Florida Foundation. This donation, along with other donations in
the coming weeks, will be used to help the survivors of the Feb. 2
tornadoes that ripped through Central Florida in the early morning hours,
claiming 20 lives and causing damage and destruction to thousands of
homes. (http://www.fladisasterfund.org/.) All donations are
tax-deductible.
"It is with great appreciation that I announce Jim Irsay and the
Indianapolis Colts are pledging $100,000 today to the Florida Disaster
Recovery Fund to help our neighbors in need," said Gov. Crist. "Their
quick response along with the financial gifts of countless others will
allow these important relief efforts to continue for the weeks and months
to come."
Said Irsay: "On February 4 we were fortunate enough to win the Super Bowl
in Miami. Our celebration was in stark contrast to the devastation
experienced by Central Florida just two days earlier. We must help the
people of Central Florida rebuild."
Irsay also has taped a public service announcement that encourages all to
donate to the Fund to help with long-term recovery.
