Food Facts, a giant food database that puts together searchable
information on about 30,000 brand-name products and 9,000 ingredients, was
launched last month.
The site
<http://www.foodfacts.com>
offers many ways to use the information, including a diet log that breaks
down what you ate into not only calories, fat, sodium and the like, but
also such constituents as omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids and their ratio,
and 22 vitamins and minerals, comparing your day's intake to the
recommended values.
You can search the database by ingredient, brand, food category,
manufacturer, vitamin or nutritional value. There's an "avoidance" tool,
to discover which foods contain ingredients to which you know you're
allergic. You can put such ingredients on a list, excluding foods that
contain them from the site's menu planner. If you have a food-related
disease, you can enter that in your profile and be alerted about foods or
ingredients known to interact with that condition. You can even be
notified about new products containing an avoided ingredient.
Not surprisingly, it isn't free. Nonmembers can do some of the searches,
but the full suite of capabilities is for members only, and costs $29.95 a
year.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------
IndiaÂs first radio on disaster management to be
launched
NAGAPATTINAM (ICNS) -- CountryÂs first dedicated radio
station on disaster management would be unveiled on
Friday here, in a significant statement of the coastal
regionÂs commitment to develop its own disaster
preparedness for future.
Nagapattinam, the Tamil Nadu district that was one of
the worst hit in the tsunami of December 26, 2004, had
lost over 7500 of its residents.
But with active assistance from NGOs such as Caritas
India, UN agencies and governmental intervention, the
residents of this coastal district have turned a new
page in their lives.
Leaving behind the horrors of the killer waves,
tomorrow the residents of this district would begin
tuning into Kalanjiyam, the community radio.
To be launched from Chennai, the station would operate
from Vizhundhamavadi, a village in the district. The
radio station was borne out of a United Nations
Development Programme financial assistance to Dhan
Foundation, based in Madurai, and with active
assistance of local people.
The foundation has already trained Âradio volunteersÂ,
from among local youngsters, many who bore the brunt
of tsunami. The foundation says the radio station
would work as a Âwarning systemÂ, and it would seek to
Âinform the local community on coping with disasters.Â
A studio for the radio station has been set up at
Vizhundhamavadi, where from initially the daily
broadcast will be for about half-an-hour, and later it
will go up to an hour.
When the foundation is granted licence by the Union
government, the broadcast will go up to six hours a
day.
The radio station would initially be available in a
radius of around two kilometers through narrowcasting,
and later when it is fully in broadcast mode the
station would cover up to 20-kilometer radius.
