Job Announcement - Program Coordinator
March 2, 2007
POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT: PROGRAM COORDINATOR for Africa and the Middle East
WITNESS is seeking a Program Coordinator to work at its Brooklyn
headquarters in New York, who would have a primary focus on supporting
partnerships and implementing trainings to enable human rights
organizations in Africa and the Middle East to integrate video and
communications technologies into their advocacy campaigns.
WITNESS uses video and online technologies to open the eyes of the world
to human rights violations. We empower people to transform personal
stories of abuse into powerful tools for justice, promoting public
engagement and policy change. WITNESS was conceived by musician and
advocate Peter Gabriel and founded in partnership with the Reebok Human
Rights Foundation and the Lawyers Committee for Human Rights (now Human
Rights First) in 1992. Today, WITNESS is a highly respected and rapidly
growing independent nonprofit organization with an annual budget of $4
million and staff of twenty nine.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Non-Governmental Organization (NGO) Partnership Coordination:
Support and maintain relationships with a core group of 2-4 WITNESS
NGO partners who are using video in advocating for human rights;
provide training in filmmaking and strategic video usage in
international human rights advocacy; assist NGOs in identifying
opportunities to produce and distribute video that can be used to
create change in human rights policy and practice; create and
implement campaign strategy around the use of video including alliance
building with relevant civil society organizations, inter-governmental
organizations, decision makers and other key campaign allies;
* Video Production: Work as producer on specific video projects,
including pre-production, production, post-production (AVID and Final
Cut Pro) and distribution; oversee the development of accompanying
materials such as promotional packaging, screening guides, education
or advocacy packets for use in video advocacy campaigns, and online
supplementary materials;
* 'Seeding Video Advocacy': Provide short-term trainings in the uses
of video in human rights advocacy to key networks of human rights and
social justice groups; assist in implementation of WITNESS' Video
Advocacy Institute; identify and cultivate strategic allies with human
rights and social justice media communities and a broad range of civil
society organizations working in human rights and new media; develop
training materials and curriculum for use by NGO partners; identify
useful non-WITNESS training materials, workshops and resources;
coordinate all 'Seeding' activities in Africa and the Middle East;
* New Technologies: Conceptualize with the Technology team the
development of participatory media and user generated content web
initiatives (our forthcoming "Hub") to promote and protect human
rights; ensure that these initiatives are implemented within a human
rights perspective;
* Framework: In collaboration with the WITNESS Deputy Director and
other staff, develop and implement program priorities that will
advance overall quality of program activity and growth of the WITNESS
project; assist in development of evaluation materials and carry out
evaluations; develop regional organizational plans and budgets.
SECONDARY RESPONSIBILITIES:
* Interns/Volunteers: In cooperation with the Program Assistant,
recruit and supervise interns, volunteers, fellows and e-interns;
* Research: Keep abreast of relevant thematic and regional human
rights issues;
* Administrative Functions: Undertake necessary administrative
functions, including database maintenance and coordination of
logistics relevant to NGO partners and 'Seeding' initiative;
* Outreach and Communication: Participate in public presentations; act
as a media spokesperson; provide input on promotional materials.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS:
Essential:
* Bachelors and/or graduate degree in a related field;
* At least 3-5 years experience working in human rights advocacy
related to Africa and the Middle East, including working
collaboratively with locally-based human rights NGOs;
* In-depth knowledge of international human rights law, standards, and
principles;
* Exposure (and preferably hands-on experience) to video and film
being used in communication and advocacy contexts;
* Excellent strategic, analytical, advocacy and communication skills;
* Strong project management and organizational skills;
* Willingness to travel overseas regularly throughout a year;
* Experience in training and teaching contexts; and
* Proficiency in French is required. Other languages a strong plus,
especially Arabic or other relevant languages of the specified
regions;
Preferable:
* Film production experience, and/or knowledge of video, editing and
related technologies, especially in the area of documentary
filmmaking;
* Experience living and working in Africa or the Middle East with an
NGO or IGO, and familiarity with regional networks.
PERSONAL PROFILE
* Energy, compassion, flexibility, a sense of humor and passion for
social change; and
* Strong collaborative partner.

2. India a 'promising' destination for community radio

India a 'promising' destination for community radio
Hindustan Times - New Delhi,Delhi,India
"Not much has moved in South Asia (in recent months)," said Suman Basnet,
the Asia Pacific regional coordinator of AMARC, the French acronym for
World ...
<http://www.hindustantimes.com/news/181_1924420,0008.htm>
[excerpt]
Basnet, who was travelling through New Delhi and Bangalore recently,
however, praised the developments in India calling them "most exciting".
"We are hopeful that India will emerge as a good training ground for
community radio not just in South Asia, but in the Asia Pacific. This is
an issue voiced by AMARC members from diverse regions," Basnet, 38, said.
"We're particularly interested in promoting the role of women in community
radio and see a very big potential of that in India. By the very number of
radio stations you're going to have in this country, it offers a vast
playing field," he said.
"AMARC's interest to work in India is really deep because India is going
to be comparable like Latin American countries like Colombia, where
community radios are counted in thousands...and there's an explosion,"
said Basnet.
He said his visit to India was to consult with local campaigners to find
out their needs. "It has to come from our Indian counterparts to tell us
what is needed of us," he said.
Community radio - also called rural radio, cooperative radio,
participatory radio, free radio, alternative, popular or educational radio
- operates out of rural or urban areas, is broadcast to small areas and
offers alternate, non-commercial, non-state voices to a diverse set of
people via the radio.
India has just opened up its 'community radio' possibilities with a new
official policy announced in mid-November 2006. Earlier, for a couple of
years, it was mostly 'campus radio' stations that were being allowed.
Currently AMARC has barely half-a-dozen members in India.
"Lot of the knowledge probably exists in India, probably have to make it
visible and present it in an organised way to those searching for it (as
far as low-cost radio technology goes)," he says.
AMARC is the international umbrella organisation of community radio
broadcasters founded in 1983, with nearly 3,000 members in 110 countries.
After being focussed in Latin America and elsewhere, it recently stepped
up its presence in Asia and is in cyberspace at
http://asiapacific.amarc.org.

American History since 1865
<http://www.bartleby.com/59/12/>
The period from 1865 to 1877 is known as Reconstruction. Victorious in the
Civil War, the North attempted, often hesitantly, to reconstruct the South
by securing civil rights for blacks freed from slavery. The Thirteenth
Amendment, Fourteenth Amendment, and Fifteenth Amendment sought to secure
those basic rights. 1
Industrial growth was dramatic in the period from 1865 to 1900, but the
expansion of industry did not benefit everyone. The newly rich robber
barons amassed enormous wealth, which they often displayed crassly.
Particularly in the late 1860s and 1870s, corruption riddled American
politics. Meanwhile, many factory workers suffered in misery, and farmers
bitterly resented their domination by the railroads and by eastern
financiers. The resentments of farmers exploded in the Populist party of
the 1890s. 2
Populism soon went into eclipse, but new efforts to bring social justice
and economic order to the United States took shape in the Progressive
movement. Progressives attacked abuses such as child labor and corporate
pillaging, and they worked successfully for womens suffrage, which was
gained with the adoption of the Nineteenth Amendment in 1920. Progressives
and others also supported Prohibition, which became law after the adoption
in 1919 of the Eighteenth Amendment. 3
Progressivism coincided with the emergence of the United States as a
world power. After its victory over Spain in the Spanish-American War
(1898), the United States steadily raised its profile in international
affairs during the presidencies of Theodore Roosevelt (19011909) and
Woodrow Wilson (19131921). Under Wilson, the United States entered World
War I in 1917 and played a key role at the Versailles peace conference
after the war.

Roosevelt, Theodore
<http://www.bartleby.com/59/12/rooseveltthe.html>
(ROH-zuh-vuhlt, ROH-zuh-velt) A political leader of the late nineteenth
and early twentieth centuries. Roosevelt was president from 1901 to 1909.
He became governor of New York in 1899, soon after leading a group of
volunteer cavalrymen, the Rough Riders, in the Spanish-American War. A
Republican, Roosevelt was elected vice president in 1900 under President
William McKinley and became president when McKinley was assassinated; he
was reelected on his own in 1904. As president, he upheld many of the
interests of the Progressive movement. His accomplishments include the
breaking up of large monopolies (see trust busting), better federal
inspection of food, closer federal regulation of railroads, and more
conservation of natural resources. Roosevelt summarized his foreign policy
as Speak softly and carry a big stick. He received the Nobel Prize for
peace in 1906, after he brought the opponents in the Russo-Japanese War to
an agreement. Construction of the Panama Canal was begun during his
presidency. He did not seek reelection in 1908, but ran unsuccessfully for
the presidency in 1912 as the candidate of the Progressive party. 1
Teddy Roosevelt was a man of hearty enthusiasms, devoted to physical
fitness (the strenuous life) and big-game hunting. He supposedly exclaimed
Bully! when he was pleased. 2
Roosevelt once said that he was as strong as a bull moose. Accordingly,
the Progressive party of 1912, which nominated him for president, was
commonly called the Bull Moose party. 3
