Review: iPod Shuffle 3

Introduction

Last week Apple introduced its third-generation iPod Shuffle, the
first significant update since the remote-control-sized aluminum
Shuffle we reviewed in November 2006. Like all previous Shuffles, the
new one lacks any display - but this one takes minimalism to the
extreme, dispensing with buttons entirely. Most of the controls have
moved to the earphone cord, while a new speech-synthesis system
("VoiceOver") enables you to navigate among playlists (which were
never supported on the old models). The newest Shuffle is smaller
than ever while holding more music; Apple claims up to 1000 songs -
which is as many as the original iPod held (back in 2001).

iPod Shuffles have always been small, but this one is a real nano!
It's a nearly featureless little stick of matte silver or black
aluminum, with a stainless steel clip on the back. It's so
restrained, it verges on boring, except for a lovely satin finish;
like iPod Classic, the "black" isn't quite black but more of a
charcoal grey with a subtle luster. In shape and size, the device
resembles nothing so much as a hair barrette or tie clip, and it's so
small that we left its earphones connected all the time just so we
could find it.

The included bud-style earphones, in Apple white, have inline volume
buttons and a clicker a few inches below the right earbud. It's very
sleek and Apple-chic, but how well does it really work?
