Sink hole traps police car

March 20, 2009 7:22 PM

Des Plaines firefighters and emergency crews had to hoist a Des
Plaines police commander's vehicle out of a sink hole today.

Police Chief Jim Prandini said that the commander was doing a radio
check, looking for dead zones, and pulled up on a sidewalk during the test.

The sidewalk collapsed as there was a significant amount of erosion
below the pavement. The area was under water last September in the
floods. The squad car was directly over a gas line, so it was lifted
straight up to avoid damaging the line, he said.
