by Marguerite Reardon News.com http://news.cnet.com/8301-30686_3-10447451-266.html?tag=newsEditorsPicksArea.0 It has taken almost a year, but on Thursday AT&T said it will start allowing Sling Media's Sling player to work over its 3G network on the iPhone. Sling Media last year introduced an application for Apple's iPhone that allowed users who had a Slingbox at home to watch their own TV service on their cell phones. Slingbox redirects and streams TV signals from a TV in a house over the Internet so it can be controlled and watched on Web-connected devices, such a laptops and other portable devices. The Sling Player on the iPhone simply opened the capability on that device. Initially, Apple rejected the application for the App Store, citing AT&T's terms of use. AT&T said that applications like the Sling Player which redirect TV signals, consume too much bandwidth. Eventually, Apple offered the app in the App Store, but it was limited to use on Wi-Fi networks. That policy has now changed. And Sling Player customers will now be able to purchase the Sling Player App for their iPhone and use it where ever they can get an AT&T 3G signal. AT&T said in a press release that it has been testing Sling Media's app since mid-December, and that the application has been modified and optimized so that it can run AT&T's 3G network. "The key for us is Sling Media was willing to work with us to revise the app to make it more bandwidth sensitive," Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO for AT&T Mobility and Consumer Markets, said in a statement. "They made important changes to more efficiently use 3G network bandwidth and conserve wireless spectrum so that we were able to support the app on our 3G mobile broadband network." ================================================= George Antunes Voice (713) 743-3923 Associate Professor Fax (713) 743-3927 Political Science Internet: antunes at uh dot edu University of Houston Houston, TX 77204-3011 *********************************** * POST TO [email protected] * *********************************** Medianews mailing list [email protected] http://lists.etskywarn.net/mailman/listinfo/medianews
