Netflix Might Offer All-Streaming Plan By Phillip Swann TVPredictions.com
http://www.tvpredictions.com/netflix092610.htm Washington, D.C. (September 26, 2010) -- Netflix, the online movie rental service, is considering adding an all-streaming video service that would likely cost less than its DVD/Blu-ray rental plan. Netflix CEO Reed Hastings made the disclosure last week in a blog posted at the company's web site, reports Bloomberg News. "We are looking at adding a streaming-only option for the USA over the coming months," Hastings wrote, adding that a streaming-only service is now available in Canada for $7.99 a month. In the last few years, Netflix has dramatically expanded its Net-enabled streaming library via partnerships with Hollywood studios and TV networks. For just $9 a month, Netflix subscribers can rent hard discs -- and choose from thousands of online movies and TV shows and watch them instantly on their PCs, Net-enabled Blu-ray players and other devices. If Netflix were to offer an all-streaming plan (no disc rentals allowed), it would likely be $1-2 a month cheaper than the disc/streaming option. One Wall Street analyst thinks that Netflix would be smart to add an all-streaming plan in the near future. "A cheaper subscription plan could be more attractive to new (subscribers) and it would also likely carry higher gross margins and potentially even higher gross profit (over time), given the extremely low cost of delivering streaming content," said Douglas Anmuth, an equity analyst for Barclays Capital, according to Bloomberg. -- ======================================== George Antunes, Political Science Dept University of Houston; Houston, TX 77204 Voice: 713-743-3923 Fax: 713-743-3927 Mail: antunes at uh dot edu _______________________________________________ Medianews mailing list [email protected] http://lists.etskywarn.net/mailman/listinfo/medianews
